How good is Trevor Lawrence

Mar 23, 2017, 6:35 PM

Or, how good should he be. I want you guys to rank Lawrence against DW4 as a freshman, Kelly Bryant as a Junior, Zerrick Cooper as a RS freshman, Tajh Boyd as a freshman, and Hunter Johnson as a freshman. Obviously these are going to be assumptions for some. The main thing I want to get from you guys is just how good TL is supposed to be, even with his senior year of HS to go.

Rank them in order. Will DW4 be #1 or Lawrence. How close could Lawrence be to what we saw our of the 2014 version of Watson? I look forward to your opinions.

Lawrence is being touted as the best HS project regardless of position going back 10-15 years. He is that good. Just go look at his tape. unreal

The most impressive thing about him is that he has had no offensive line. He is going to break DW4's HS record while running for his life every play

I've talked to a few guys that are the GHSA football network around GA and they claim this kid to be the real deal and most importantly...ALL IN...loves him some Clemson and was always going to come to Clemson despite the UGA push. He's easily and by far, the best QB in the country this year and will be the best QB when he steps on campus on 18'.

Re: How good is Trevor Lawrence

Mar 23, 2017, 7:10 PM

I talked to some Georgia high school people who have watched him and got some...other takes. Slightly. He's massive, can run incredibly well for as big as he is, tremendous natural athlete, and his arm is a howitzer with which he can blow holes in brick walls from 75 yards out. Incredible natural toolset, projects enormously well to the NFL. If ever the NFL were to abandon that 3-years-in-college rule and start drafting kids right out of high school he's one of those rare physical mutants (like a Jadaveon Clowney or Leonard Fournette or suchlike) who could maybe do it. Also is a high-character kid from a good family, natural leader, charismatic, all that.

As for the bad, he is not as polished or cerebral a passer or student of the game as DW4 was coming out of high school, and he's got a couple of (probably correctable) glitches in his delivery at the moment. He's got truly massive, monstrous upside...but for those expecting him to just come and push the likes of Zerrick Cooper, Hunter Johnson, etc. right out of the way...maybe not. He might actually need a year or two to mature and learn the system...though because he's got superior physical tools to any QB prospect in recent memory with the possible exception of Cam Newton, he's likely a Top-5 pick if he develops to his seeming potential.

My own opinion, I don't think he starts from Minute 1 from what I'm hearing about him. He'll undoubtedly play some as a true freshman but he'll have to come on huge to push out whichever of Bryant/Cooper/Johnson as a true frosh.

Mar 23, 2017, 7:25 PM

He is a the son of a coach. As a result, he probably knows how to watch film and read defenses better than most other freshmen quarterbacks. He's much stronger and more athletic than some people may realize. He's an accurate passer with great wheels.

It sets up nicely for Lawrence to redshirt and gain some experience before taking over.

As a High School Junior he looked like an NFL QB playing against little kids. He was just that bigger, faster, stronger, and more accurate with his throws than anybody else. If he doesn't win a Heisman and at least one National Championship in college I'll be shocked.

Re: How good is Trevor Lawrence

Mar 23, 2017, 8:23 PM

If he comes in as an early enrollment then I think he starts 2018 unless Hunter comes on like DW4. Of course for that to happen, Hunter has to get a chance.

I don't buy in that Trevor isn't a student of the game like DW4 and that it will take that long for him to learn our offense.

Hunter is further along than is being told. He's just not getting the reps with the first team. If the coaches wanted him to start, he could and win.

I feel we'll need to go more towards a pro style offense to really exploit their talents and right now I don't think kelly or zerrick would be a good fit for that.

Bottom line, it's up to the coaches.

different QB than DW4, but his upside is almost as high. He is a better runner than people think and for his level (rising HS senior) he will be able to make all the throws. I respect all the QB's we have on campus now and I think we can win big with several of them, but I will be very surprised if TL is not starting by the end of his freshman year.

Several. Including a couple Atlanta coaches I talk to.

Not that they weren't impressed by him - they thought he was very impressive - but they just didn't think he was quite as advanced in either his delivery or his reads as Deshaun was in high school and sometimes was getting away with just blowing a 110mph heater in there, some stuff they thought he would have to un-learn at the college level. But they did think he had superior physical tools and a higher ceiling than almost anyone they had seen...including Deshaun. Which is saying quite a lot. They also were a little worried about the level - 2A is just a way different animal than 7A is, down in Georgia. The concern was the speed of the game was a little slow, and he was a little long-armed in his delivery. They did like the way he could use his mobility to extend plays, though.

Just some high school coaches' opinions, but they're, IMHO, very sharp guys who usually are pretty dead-on.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Cartersville is 4A

Mar 24, 2017, 12:32 AM

Their region competition is suspect, however, they played and beat some impressive teams in the playoffs. Same thing last year as well. 2 straight state titles. Kid can play and will be the best QB on campus when he arrives.

Cartersville is 4A and Gainsville is 6A

Using 247 composite ranking, which takes into account all

Mar 23, 2017, 9:34 PM

(I assume) of the major recruiting services, It goes like this:

Trevor Lawrence 5-Stars, .9998 composite, #1 pro style QB, #1 player overall.
Hunter Johnson 5-Stars, .9851 composite, #2 pro style QB, #30 player overall.
Deshaun Watson 4-Stars, .9791 composite, #1 dual-threat QB, #41 player overall.
Zerrick Cooper 4-Stars, .9083 composite, #7 dual-threat QB, #249 player overall.
Chase Brice 4-Stars, .8985 composite, #11 dual-threat QB, #279 player overall.
Kelly Bryant 3-Stars, .8777 composite, #14 dual-threat QB, #413 player overall.
Tucker Israel 3-Stars, .8535 composite, #22 dual-threat QB, #795 player overall.

That's roughly how good they are/were supposed to be coming out of high school; decide for yourself how accurate that was for those that we've already seen play at Clemson. Now, let's see how good the newbs are once they play in an actual game or two. Until then, we really don't know. My guess is that no school in the country is better off at QB than Clemson for the foreseeable future.

His stats are off the charts like Watsons.

Trevor (3 years): 120 TD's, 20 INT, 10597 yards
Hunter (4 years): 69 TD's, 36 INT, 6657 yards
DW4 (4 years): 155 TD's, 29 INT, 13077 yards

I'm expecting good things.

With his size he's going to be talked about as the #1 overall pick after half a year of playing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: How good is Trevor Lawrence

Mar 24, 2017, 8:41 AM

They can't change the CB projections after they commit. It just shows how wrong they were. The CB % is useless. The important part is the most recent trend of CB picks. That's usually more accurate than the overall CB %. Also, nobody had any clue where TL was gna go.
