What's the best rod/reel setup for a 5yo? Zebco Dock Demon seems to be a popular rec, but wanted to check with the experts.

That is the one. Also ultralights are fun and inexpensive to put together.

Literally anything. Most important thing is he’s outdoors having fun and experiencing nature.
Walmart under $30 probably. Closed face reel.

Anything other than the cheapest closed-face reel is WAY overthinking it for a 5 year old. If you have an Ollie's near you, they keep a nice display of $10 rod/reel combos on the floor all summer long.

Yeah...it's mainly what closed reel is less prone to tangling.

I went with a Zebco 202 because it said it had a patented tangle-prevention system. And as the purveyor of many patents, this spoke to me.

He's gonna need some Devil's Horse, Broke-Back Rapalas, Hula Poppers. Anything with big ole treble hooks to keep you on your toes.

I'd recomend a Van Staal VS50 bail less spinning reel

and a St. Croix Legend Elite medium power / fast action 6'6" rod, using 15# Power Pro braid and about an 8' leader of Aftco Saiko flourocarbon leader.
I'm partial to the crazy Alberto knot to join the two, but that's really users preference. A Carolina rig with 1/8 oz weight and some 2/0 or 3/0 Mustad circle hooks for live bait using finger mullet, and an outgoing flood tide.

I've got a couple of cheap zebcos along with several poles for me and other adults. I've got some crab lines for them too. I'm guessing attention span will be like 5 minutes after they all fight for the same pole or crab line to start.

My son got one when he was Jason borned.
11 years later and still works perfectly. Caught hundreds of fish on it including a 10 lb carp.

Mine has a Penn Battle III 2500 spinning rod/reel combo

Mostly because I found it on sale at West Marine after what I assume was a catfish took the Snoopy rod/reel. He's gotten good at casting the spinning reel, does better with it than he did the closed face. Letting go of the line is easier than timing when to press the button for him, I guess. He is also 5.

Basically you buy the reel and get the rod for free.
Somehow, somebody in Florida busted 1 of my Battle III 5000 rods. Bent/broke two guides. I didn't even ask anyone about it. I guess it gives me a reason to buy a Penn Carnage or a St Croix rod.

They suck to re-spool or repair but for $20 who cares.
Also I’ll take you and your boy fishing. Catch some big uns. You just have to be at the lake house at 6am and I’ll do the rest. I’m serious

We can schedule a weekend when it’s just the wife and I there. Worst case scenario is you get a boat ride. I can’t guarantee fish but I’ll charter you for free.
