Brad Brownell status
Mar 16, 2022, 11:26 AM
|

I posted last week that all signs pointed to Brad Brownell returning for next season, and I wanted to let everyone know that I've heard we could have a statement from new AD Graham Neff in the next day or so. For the record, I am still hearing that Brownell will be retained. Would love to know everyone's thoughts on the matter.

I think it is the right thing to do in bringing Coach Brownell back!! What really disturbs me most, being a Clemson follower, it is a SHAME we have 5 or 6 Clemson fanatics that spend their time trying to be the AD, and trying to destroy Coach Brownell!! Looking back on this basketball year, we have had several key players hurt that has played in making it difficult to win in several key games!! Do you see where these fanatics mention this when tearing the program down!! I think we need to get behind our basketball program like we do football and be a positive influence instead of every thing being a tear down attitude!! I like to win just as much as anyone!! I beg, please quit tearing our basketball program down, quit posting everything negative and get behind our coach and team this next year and then if we don’t see improvement in our winnings then let our administration handle it!! Getting on here with all your negativity does nothing but hurt the entire program, players and coaches and fans!! Hope everyone understands where I am coming from!! I love Clemson sports and I trust the people in charge to make the right decisions!! GO TIGERS!!!

Go look at all social media indications on approval of Brad Brownell, just as well as other fan sites. He is not popular at all...

Maybe your reps but you very wrong as is the above poster that only a few here are unhappy … that couldn’t be more opposite … I think a TON and I’d venture to guess around 75% of actual Clemson fans are unhappy with BB and would love a change , I don’t know a single Clemson fan that wants him back next or , or really the last 4-5 years

I know a lot of current Clemson students, my daughter being one, and alums. Nobody is happy with the state of our basketball program, with the possible exception of Brownell.
If he is allowed to stay, then that clearly shows where Neff has Clemson Basketball on his priority list.

Would not be surprised if he’s not retained by CU any longer. However, the new AD Neff will be setting a precedent with whatever he does since this is most likely his first major coaching decision.
Mr. Neff needs to work collaboratively with Coach BB and have a clear set of goals expectations with a timeline moving forward.

I think this all has to do with PJ Hall. One of the best players we have had here in a while and he is only getting better (especially when he gets healthy). AD Neff does not want to rock that boat. After next year if PJ enters the draft and they do not make a deep run in the playoffs, then BB is a gonner!!

Or if, you know, he uses the portal to go somewhere that he might be noticed. Because PJ Hall is not on any NBA draft lists. He’s not ranked in anyway on most of the major sites. I’m sure one of JK’s scocks is gonna go make a blog post about PJ Hall to the nba to try on own mr, but right that’s a pipe dream.

I agree wholeheartedly. One player should not decide, but if PJ is All In on BB, I am in favor of one more year. BTW, if you ARE a supporter, go the games. Sometimes Littlejohn feels a lot like my Presbyterian church, quiet and plenty of room to stretch out!

Personally, I'm not happy about it and I'm sure many others aren't either. But it was to be expected that he would be retainded. I used to defend Brownell several years ago. Sadly though, I am feeling extremely apathetic for the next basketball season. If Brad comes back and we finish in the bottom half of the ACC again, I would hope that'd be the last straw for him.
There's really not much left to say about the Brad subject that hasn't already been said and beaten to death time and time again. We, as a proud university that strives for excellence on and off the field, deserve something better on the court and 12 years is enough time to get this figured out. I'll be watching and cheering for the team next year and just hope for the best for players that chose this great university. But it is time for a change at the helm. That's all I will say on the subject. Thankfully baseball has a bright glimmer of hope to this season and football will be here before we know it.

I agree with a poster above. If he is retained then so be it but he needs to have a clear set of goals and expectations that he must meet. We need to set goals such as win the ACC and be a consistent competitor in the NCAA tournament, and if Brad isn't the guy to get us there, then we should look for someone else. With where we are at right now, I would not be shocked if we keep him around, but I really want someone else to be in charge of this program. We need new energy and excitement.

Clemson would not accept this 12 year record in football. Why are we as an institution ok with it for basketball? I say fire Brad and go throw enough money at the best coach out there. Twelve years!!!

Yes, it's like they throw everything that Oliver Purnell started here as nothing. And Rick Barnes as well. It's like they feel that Clemson has never had a,successful coach on the court before. Add Cliff Ellis and Bill Foster to that list too. Ts got to be financial decision.
Here is an interesting question, does Brad Brownell think he would still be here if he knew what he has accomplished on the court in 12 years?

I've never seen anybody take what OP started here as nothing....
It was nice that he left BB ACC quality players for 1 year. After that the talent was bad and not deep. It was also nice that brownell got to tell recruits that we had been the the NCAA's 3 years in a row..
At the end of the day, we still didn't have a good program. Our "successful" coach bolted for freaking DePaul! That's pathetic. Here is the state of the program when BB took over - still the worst history in the ACC - still the worst facilities in the ACC - smallest financial support in the ACC - hadn't won a tourney game since Rick Barnes
But we went to the tourney and lost in the first round 3 years ago! Talk about lipstick on a pig.

There are plenty saying it, one more than others. It goes something like this "we have been bad for 110 years, be happy that Lord Brownell has made us a winning program."
OP had to deal with all the same issues that Brownell has had to deal with. He was more successful than Brad has been even after he got the facility upgrades and had 12 years to build a program.

change, this soon after getting the ad job. He's already familiar with the current issues of our program. My guess is that he wants to tell BB exactly what his expectations are for coaching and the program and then see if BB can meet his expectations.
Having said all of that, I personally, would like to see a coaching change made now. After 12 seasons we already know what we have. Not making a change is going to lead to even less enthusiasm and attendance next season and appears to just be kicking the can down the road and prolonging the inevitable.

I think Brownell is a good coach, not great, but ok. Good character person also. But this is a business based on winning and the fact is that Clemson basketball is not a winning program. People used to say it is because we play in the ACC. I think we need a change of leadership that does not fall into that trap. Clemson has too much to offer. Plus the ACC isn't as good in basketball as it used to. Soon new coach at Duke and NC should be able to help Clemson recruit better. I think we need to make the change.

If we would do a lateral move, we would go backwards because our players and recruits may not stay. If we are going to change course and add a couple of million dollars to salary and benefits we might shop but it would be tough now to talk with coaches of teams in the tournament until they lose. No need to change for change shape.

I think it’s a terrible move but will admit that’s there is some brass to it on his part. AD Neff Will never be able to take meaningful credit for anything to do with football. It’s a blessing and a curse. It’s far and away the most important thing but all he can do is mess it up. It’s Dabo’s show to run. If he lets Dabo get away then he’s burnt toast. If the program slips and it’s even hinted that Dabo isn’t getting something he needs - Neff is toast. Basketball is the next most high profile sport. It’s where Neff can make his legacy. He’s choosing to double down on a 13th year coach with mediocre results. He must truly believe that administrative changes can enable Coach Brownell. I don’t think for a second it will work but it is his choice to make.

Great point viztiz. Would he feel the same if he was already here a year as the top AD?
Also here is how popular Brad Brownell is. Obviously the easy answer is Brad Brownell to how many NCAA bids and NIT bids compared to Frank Martin, but most in Upstate disagree:

Well, at SCAR, they have to compare their men's BB coach to their women's program, rather than the football program. Now that they're a women's basketball school and all.

Counter Effects Of TP & NIL On Athletic Budget
Mar 16, 2022, 12:07 PM
|
|
I hate to say this for sake of sounding like I do not supporting all sports, but I think that Neff needs to see the full impact of the transfer portal and NIL before we increase our budget for basketball. I know football has been the cash cow for quite some time but let's say we sink more money into a historically mediocre basketball program only to find out that our current football recruiting and rosters take a dip in quality. I can live with mediocre basketball but I can't live with mediocre football again. We have been to the mountain top and we need to fully understand what it takes to stay there before propping up other programs.

If they truly believe investing more in the basketball program will hinder the football program then I am fine with them keeping the status quo.

I can hear the refrain; Retain ,retain. We all know the status quo will remain; Retain, retain. Why make a change Just lets keep things the same; Retain, retain. However ,if Graham decides to make a change; Then we can start all over again!

Interesting that Neff is just going to have a statement. Usually most do that to indicate the coach is not coming back. I think Neff needs to generate good PR for this and meet with the media to indicate what the plan moving forward for Brad is to Tiger Nation...

From a business/budget stand point it is the right thing to do but for a program growth/development point of view it is wrong.

I understand both sides... The Fire-Brad side... We are not performing at an acceptable level.. and it seems to be stuck in a pattern.
The Keep-Brad side... He is the winningest coach in our history... our history being mostly bad. Who can we get that is better?
What I would like to hear the AD set a clear vision/standard for the program and then we move forward starting next year judging the program against those criteria. That would give us all something clear to see each year and trends to follow.

Isn’t he also the coach with the most losses in our history? It’s past time for a change. I would rather fail in an effort to try to get better than to accept this is the best we can expect.

I believe after 12 years it’s time to move on and we need change. New blood in the program. We’ve been through this before. “He’ll have a better team next year” “One more year” or the opposite and “We’ll fire him next year” and he does just enough to save his job.
After 11 years you are what your record says your are and unfortunately that’s not good enough.
I love Coach Brownell. He’s an absolutely great guy. He’s the head coach I’ve met the most and talked to. It’s not easy, but honestly I’m sure he would deep deep down understand.
Anyways, I suppose next year will be his “win or you’re fired season”. He’s had a few of those so we’ll see what happens.

to basketball in terms of a championship mindset. Nothing changes. Ultimately, the powers that be and influencers of the program don't care enough. Olympic sports outside of basketball are doing well are doing well and football is football.
I'd love to know what the board of directors and power donors think about basketball....do they actually care, seriously?

I no longer follow Clemson basketball ... oxymoron there ... and barely follow football or any other Clemson sport due to political issues that have arisen between the Clemson administration and a group of conservatives that includes me. That said, I enjoy the characters on Tnet but don't post very much. I used to be what, for me, was a pretty heavy IPTAY donor and my wife and I were very involved with Dabo and his "All-In" initiatives. Dabo actually knew us by sight ... probably because my wife's name is Kathleen (too). Anyway, we used to attend every BB game as the OP teams were fairly exciting. But ... but ... after OP left, I was in a conversation with Brad at Dabo's All-In Ball, I think in 2011 or 2012, and I asked him one question ... "Are you recruiting Aquille Carr pretty hard? ... and his answer told me everything I needed to know, since Carr was the 2nd coming of Muggsy Bogues and ended up going to Providence, I believe. He said, "I'm not familiar with the name." After an awkward pause, I said, "Well, it was nice talking to you" and moved on. Bottom line: He emits no excitement and there is no excitement around the program. Sometimes a change needs to be made just to make a change. That time would be now. FWIW, IMHO ...

he actually can't talk about recruits in public, but since it was just you and him, he could have just noded his head or something. wrong thing to say for sure. that kind of goes along with my post about his radio show. Doesn't no how to engage his audience or fanbase to get excited about basketball at all. I remember when TDP said that is why he was letting Shyatt go, because the apathy toward the program. We should have someone like him as the AD...

I think it's time to look in a different direction. I guess Neff doesnt want to make a big splash in his first year. The announcement and the Neff's reaction next year will give us a little better idea on how long Brownell's leash is.

Many, many fans, myself included, are serious about basketball. We want a winning team and we want to win an ACC Tournament. I want to win before I die!
Brownell would not be employed for 12 years at any other conference team without winning the conference.
Mike Young has been at VT 3 years and just won big.
The tigers fielded a good team this year and have potential to win 5 or 6 more games next year. Does that put us in the NCAA tournament? Who knows? But if the AD, BOT, etc want us to get excited about the future of Clemson basketball we better get results and soon.
12 years wouldn't cut it any where else without results.

I don't get the vibe that Neff is the type of AD that has a
Mar 16, 2022, 4:57 PM

|
vision of his own. I feel like he will be driven by whoever the loudest voice is. For instance, TDP listened to TB about Dabo and went off a gut feeling. Neff will pose the question to iptay and the masses will dictate his next move. So maybe Neff reads tigernet and will just go with whatever the sentiment is on that particular day.. so if ya'll complain enough maybe it'll change his mind.

It’s time to part ways. Even if we make the tournament next year, the following season after that will be another 3-4 year rebuild, as PJ Hall and company will be gone. Competent coaches and programs are able to string together consecutive winning seasons. That’s something Brad has never been able to do in 12 years now.

But really wish they would get rid of him at this point. I’m a lifelong diehard fan, probably have spent a little too much time making the drive back and forth for a program that just doesn’t seem to care much about winning. I don’t really plan to go back to any games next year if nothing changes. I may take the time to relax and recharge and focus on other things.
