Drake’s equation says highly likely that alien civilizations have existed in other parts of galaxy/universe. Highly UNLIKELY we would ever intersect with them.
The universe is more than 13 billion years old,” said Sullivan. “That means that even if there have been a thousand civilizations in our own galaxy, if they live only as long as we have been around—roughly ten thousand years—then all of them are likely already extinct. And others won’t evolve until we are long gone. For us to have much chance of success in finding another "contemporary" active technological civilization, on average they must last much longer than our present lifetime.”
“Given the vast distances between stars and the fixed speed of light we might never really be able to have a conversation with another civilization anyway,” said Frank. “If they were 20,000 light years away then every exchange would take 40,000 years to go back and forth.”

that aliens became interested with us as soon as we started harnessing nuclear power for bombs.
Depending on your understanding of the possibility of other dimensions, very plausible that advanced species would have the capability of mapping out where in galaxies and/or potentially even the universe an atom split given the amount of energy that's given off.
Drake's equation is purely based on probabilities. However, if a handful exist, and they appear to be visiting us, then that's ultimately all it would take. And there has to be an ability to bend space and time to mitigate the travel concerns, or, to your point, they'd never be able to make it here.
So to clarify, based on our understanding of physics today, communication between two starts 20k light years away would be 40k years. For others it could be minutes. But then what would a minute be in that scenario?

For about 100 years. So a hundred lightyear circle around us is all that could know we are here. The milkyway is 100 thousand lightyears across. So our circle of broadcasting is tiny one onethousandths of the distance in all directions.

The probability of a “contemporary” active alien civilization is impossibly remote.
Million+ light year away (long extinct) technologically superior alien civilizations? Maybe not as rare as many would think. Their ‘hard goods’ could reasonably survive indefinitely in a void-like environment for many millennia.
Does that make it likely that such alien ‘hard goods’ would make it to the earth? No no no.
Possible (even if remotely so)? Sure.
