Wondering if the NBA is Concerned

…that college basketball is an immensely superior product for the viewers? The NBA’s broadcast ratings are down something like 50%.
NBA games are almost sterile now - glorified three point shooting contests. No defense and very little strategy.
I was just thinking about some of the classic and physical WARS from the 70s and 80s. Series like Celts/Pistons and Celts/Lakers were just fun to watch. Now I really don’t even watch the playoffs and finals.
Your mileage may vary, I guess.

I agree. The NBA is laughable. They walk, double dribble, and fake injuries constantly. Don't know why they pay these people so much.

is incorrect. It's much more difficult to play defense now because you have to defend 25+ feet from the basket. Old school basketball was primarily played in and around the paint. There's just a much larger amount of space that needs to be defended now.
I think people just see wide open threes given up in the NBA and think that's the result of terrible defense and bad strategy. It's not.
I do think the "optimal" strategy is making the games a worse product though. It's all about threes and layups now since those are the two highest EV shots (along with FTs which are generated by driving for layups). The mid-range game is rapidly dying. The classic center position is basically gone. It's not optimal strategy to have a 7 footer in the lane dragging his defender down around the basket with him. Bigs now need to be able to shoot so they can force their defender away from the basket to open up those driving lanes.

They also got rid of the hand checking they’d allow in the 80s/90s.
So it’s harder to defend because guys keep getting more and more skilled offensively coupled with a league emphasis this century on offense which trickles down to officiating.

Whatever is causing it, the result seems to be basketball that fewer people want to watch.

The only good thing about the NBA is the show that Charles Barkley and Shaq are on. They are hilarious.

There are something like 1M more viewers per game for the NBA than the NCAA.
I hate the NBA. But ratings show college hoops is not "immensely superior."

It’s a difficult comparison. 30-something teams vs hundreds. March madness games (per AI - disclaimer) are close to 5x the views of a regular season NBA game. It would be interesting to do the work to determine how many total eyeballs per season for each, but I am too lazy to undertake that. Difficult comparison.
“Superior” is ultimately in the subjective eye of the viewer, but I certainly prefer college hoops.

You are comparing the best games (March Madness) to the average NBA game. NBA playoff games pull more viewers than NCAAT.

I really don’t care, but if they’d like to send me 100 Billion dollars, I can pretty much guarantee that all of their problems will be over.

The late 80s and 90s is what i grew up watching and it was elite. The NBA game for the last 20 years has been pretty lackluster.

And I pay attention to the regular season with passing interest. The stakes just aren't there night-in and night-out.
What really gets on my nerves is the amount of traveling they allow in the game now -- both pro and college. In the pros, the step-back three and the Euro-step have metastasized into guys taking 3, 4, 5 steps before getting rid of the ball. The argument I've heard is that the league doesn't mind it so much because it leads to more scoring, which they think the fans want more of. But when I see that play out, I feel more like, "what the hell are we doing now?"
And then this year especially in college, it's been almost worse. I swear I've seen at least 3 or 4 instances in the tournament this year where a guy in the paint will pick up his dribble and pivot and pivot and pivot and eventually pick up his pivot foot, do a stutter step, dance the charleston, and end up taking about 6 or 7 steps with no call. Makes you wonder what game the refs are watching.
