Why are we failing on COVID in America?!
Aug 10, 2020, 1:11 AM
|
|
It baffles me how we, the self proclaimed, “Greatest Country in the World”, are failing so badly in regards to COVID. Just looking through the lens of sports for the sake of this board...we are on the verge of cancelling college football. How can the entire European continent get to a point where they are having competitions outside of a bubble? I mean for gods sake the Champions League, a continental tournament, has even started back. These players don’t live in a bubble either like the NBA.
Why can’t we as Americans do what’s best for our fellow Americans? Why are masks politicized when it’s a matter of health? Why has the rest of the civilized world gotten a grip over a virus that is still ravaging our country?
I sit here and think that we have become a country filled with selfishness, where we put our “rights and freedoms” before common decency.
We all want college football to happen, and many of us are responsible for the fact that it’s not going to happen.
It’s a shame that the fact college football is going to be cancelled angers many of you more than the deaths of over 160k people.

Mostly agree with all that. Seems as if we had taken seriously from the beginning and had a more centralized response, we could be in a different position at the moment.
Honestly was just reflecting on what has gotten us to this point and how other countries are having sports sans bubbles.

Those countries got hit hard, the government Did Not react as fast as the US.
They all got sick, shut down and got through it.
If 90% of your population gets sick and shuts down, your maximum new case total is capped at 10% when you open up again.

Dude...no country got even close to 90% getting sick. In fact, I'd wager a bet that no country has even gotten above 3-4%. Italy was the hardest hit and they are at ~0.4% positive confirmed. US has the most cases in the world, and we're at ~1.5%.

There are 7 countries with higher deaths per million than the U.S. Belgium being the highest then UK, Peru, Spain, Italy, Sweden and Chile.
There are 142 countries that have lower deaths per million than the U.S.

Actually I didn’t, have always just read the main board on the front page for the past 10 years.
Was never allowed to post since I was a manager with the team for 5 seasons. Finally decided to create an account and vent some frustrations about what we are dealing with.

They want power grabbing so they want everything politicized.
I have family members who are healthcare workers, and they haven't shut down anything.
BUT the swamp and their media allies want to shut down schools but ignore and allow the rioting to happen.
They're stoking fear.
So ask your politicians that question.

It is precisely that kind of thinking that has led us to no football this year. This isn't about Trump, it's about peoples health. Yet so many want to make this all about Trump's reelection than the health crisis it is.
30 million Americans are out of work, but somehow this whole "virus thing" has been blown out of proportion. That sort of politicization of a Pandemic is why we're in the mess we're in.

The hospitals, where it actually matters, get tests back within minutes to hours. They are the ones who need to know so they use right treatment protocol. They can also use CT scans and other tools to diagnose.
For everyone else, it doesn’t make much difference. If they have symptoms and suspect they have COVID, they are told to self-quarantine. So nothing changes for them.
There's only 1 major flaw in your theory, 40% of Covid patients are asymptomatic. They don't feel symptoms but spread the virus just as much as those who do. Testing after you've gotten to the hospital is a wasted test. Testing people to identify the carriers is the only way to prevent the spread they might otherwise have occured.
Mass testing, identifying the carriers and quarantining them is why Europe will be playing soccer this year and we won't be having college football.

that every health agency in the US has said repeatedly that we’re not trying to contact trace. It’s about mitigation. Most Americans do not want the Contact Tracing Police harassing them or privacy invading GPS devices and apps.
This is about personal responsibility. If you don’t want the virus then do things to not get it. The US isn’t about a nanny state though.
In fact, we gave up on 'contact tracing' as our cases rose into the millions. We went from 2 million to 3 million cases in just 15 days. Tracing that is impossible.
As far as "contact tracing police", who in the world would resent being told they've been in contact with a victim which could conceivably save their lives. Paranoia is not a good strategy for diminishing this Pandemic.

We are only "failing" because that is what youre told we are doing. I actually think we are doing just fine handling the virus. Its a BRAND NEW virus that no one in the world knows anything about. So with no prior experience to judge from how can you even say we are "failing". At best we are learning.

Well take a look at what happened in Chicago last night. Hundreds of people just up and decided to rob and loot the mall. Watch some of the people who did it, they actually posted themselves looting in a live stream. Listen to their attitudes. THAT is why we are failing. Because people in this country hold an I DONT GIVE A FUCCCK attitude. And there is NOTHING the Government can do to help that. It starts with Mom and DAD.

I wouldn’t say we’re failing. We’re learning to live with a virus AND keep our economy running. Every country will have the same challenges as the US as they loosen restrictions. We are just the first to say we’re not going to live in fear of a virus where 99% plus of the people who get come through just fine.

big weddings with receptions, and all the normal activities. Social distancing was ignored and almost no one wore masks. These resulted in several new cases. If it makes you feel any better (it should not), America did the same thing in the 1918 Flu epidemic: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/03/us/mask-protests-1918.htmlThe Mask Slackers of 1918 As the influenza pandemic swept across the United States in 1918 and 1919, masks took a role in political and cultural wars. The Mask Slackers of 1918 As the influenza pandemic swept across the United States in 1918 and 1919, masks took a role in political and cultural wars.
...and we were fine... 1/2 million deaths later. Something about learning from history and doomed to repeat it yada yada freakin yada.

So much of it is fake news....no one knows the true number of deaths caused by the virus. If you died in a car accident and had the virus then it is counted as a Covid-19 death. A large % of the positive tests are false but the hospitals get money for each positive and Covid-19 death.

It's sad that people still think this is the case. I thought these morons who read this on Facebook 3 months ago had all died from stupidity or realized that these were just lies and aren't even close to the truth.
There is not a single person who died from blunt force trauma in a car accident and got counted as a COVID death. If you actually believe that Doctors are changing cause of death to get more funding from the government and risking their license, then keep digging ditches and leave the smart stuff for the educated folks

Nothing completely different like someone getting their head bashed in a car accident. COVID is listed as a co-morbidity on deaths, just like we do with all other diseases.

um... https://coloradosun.com/2020/05/15/colorado-coronavirus-death-certificate/
Explain that then....
"Instead, the death figure CDPHE has been providing for weeks is more accurately described as the number of people with COVID-19 who have died — for any reason. The number of people who have died and have COVID-19 listed on their death certificate is 24% lower: 878, according to CDPHE’s latest figures."

Notice, the article isn't just about the poeple who didn't have it listed, it also states that the numbers they were reporting weren't people that died FROM it, but people that dies WITH it, for ANY reason. Which is exactly what the poster is saying has been happening.

People don't seem to understand the process by which a death certificate is issued. All of them have to be confirmed by a coroner. In other words, some would prefer to believe that there is an ongoing conspiracy among the hundreds of coroners in the country.
I don't understand why people will believe this sort of nonsense.

Sounds like you don't understand it....more than just coroners can sign the death certificates....
Straight from a story about it aback in April: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/investigations/2020/04/25/coronavirus-death-toll-hard-track-1-3-death-certificates-wrong/3020778001/
"Physicians, coroners, medical examiners, and in some states, other medical personnel, such as nurse practitioners, can legally sign death certificates, said Sally Aiken, president of the National Association of Medical Examiners and a practicing medical examiner in Spokane County, Washington."

What makes you come to the conclusion we are failing?

There is a novel virus that is extremely contagious, people are going to get sick. There is no cure, there are some treatments that are being tried, there is also a push to get a vaccine out. Some people have gotten sick and some have died, this happens every year with other factors besides Covid. Should we all sit at home and somehow never leave and expect that all of our needs will be met by the government? Look at Sweden, no masks, no shutdown, no school closures they had a spike and now have declining numbers of cases, did they fail? I will be interested to see how New Zealand does, they have had no cases in 100 days, as soon as they open their borders they will inevitably have a spike. There is a sickness that we can't control, there is no failing or winning, it just is, if you want the government to control everyone's behaviors we will have to be a communist nation. We should protect those who are most vulnerable and let everyone else live their lives.

Sweden is the worst hit of the Scandinavian countries. Yes, they failed relative to their geography and demographics

Sweden is middle of the pack for deaths per million in Europe. They did not shut down the economy, kids are in school, and have actually seen GDP increase. Based on recent figures, they appear to have reached (or are fast approaching) herd immunity, while other European nations are seeing new spikes and have all but destroyed their economies. Time will tell, but it is looking like Sweden were the only ones to have played it right.

Sweden also has incredibly healthier population than the US. Their death rate due to heart disease, diabetes, obesity, etc is <50% than US. Of course their death rate should be better, they're all healthy and wealthy.
If the US did what Sweden did, we'd be destroyed because 70% of our population is overweight and >30% are obese. We're a bunch of fat, unhealthy slobs.

Thats not accurate. Sweden has higher deaths per million than the US. Their "experimental" response to the virus was an abject failure. They have the 6th highest deaths per million in the entire world.

Daily case rates...really? In fact we've agreed before that 'deaths per million' was one of the only metrics to determine the success or failure of a Pandemic response.
Sweden has the 6th highest deaths per million in the entire world. They have a higher death per million than the U.S.
I don't think Sweden is the example I'd hang my hat on.

... We’re just trying to delay the inevitable here.
In fairness, you may be right. I hope you're not, but it's starting to look that way.

Either way, they are not far out of line with the some other European nations. There are certainly European countries who responded with shutdowns that faired worse (see Spain and Italy). Again, we’ll see where the final numbers land, but it appears they just experienced their surge in a shorter timeframe, while the rest of the world continues to fight new waves.
NJ, NY, and CT account for a disproportional portion of US total deaths and have abysmal deaths per million. Taking them out of the equation and the rest of US are more in line with the better performing Euro nations. Another poster commented about how senior care facilities were handled (or mishandled). That seems to be the one area of response that most certainly has a significant impact on outcome. We can argue about the effectiveness of other policies, but the truth is there is a wide spread of outcomes from places that used a wide range of strategies that have produced mixed results.

The universities may want to flex their liberal muscle and continue efforts to wreck the economy. These people in the university world live in some serious bubbles...
