I hope Portnoy does this. He will be so transparent about it that people who are not paying attention will start. Something like this will speed up getting some new rules that govern big time college football as it is now a largely ungoverned professional sport. It is not going back to an amateur endeavor again but all other big time professional sports have free agency rules.

That is anecdotal, but I have never talked to anyone that loves the portal and NIL the way that it currently is.

At times, college footbal is disgusting to me because of the buying of players. It was the sport that I loved since I was 4 years old. Very sad.

what is his ROI on these payments? Is this sustainable? Or is he just throwing money away hoping Michigan will compete for the national championship every year? And then he can go brag to his friends?

Lots of very rich people use college football as a mech suit for their ego. This is why a totally unregulated sport just devolves into bragging rights battles between billionaires. NFL has been saved from this.

Portnoy doesn’t answer to a board. He sold the company and bought it back for a song. He brokered a deal for Penn to run ESPN Bet which was a $2 bil deal. He never had to go public. He’s generationally rich, now.

for bragging rights for a long time. It will be interesting to see how long these big donors will maintain their loyalty/support when the sport changes so much it loses its luster. I just don’t see it being sustainable long term.

There are plenty of wealthy individuals willing to spend millions per year in the hopes of improving their favorite football team.
I would venture to say that the vast majority of NIL money being spent right now is just boosters buying players and not actual marketing investments where a company is hoping to benefit from the exposure.

Rich people aren't looking for a return on investment to universities.
Is anyone looking for an ROI on their IPTAY donation?
and it's better than a general donation because it makes them feel like they are directly contributing and maybe part of the decision making process.
A lot of rich people like to feel like they have power.

With barstool? If an entity is actively at odds with the goals of my organization then I'd avoid anything that benefits that entity. There is no shortage of places on the internet and social media to promote your school you don't need barstool.
Same thing for Nike and Oregon; F em.

Resource in Nikes arsenal to benefit Oregon including:
Sponsorship payments Marketing resources Exclusive apparel items(design their own shoes) Internships Future job offers...
Knight isn't using his own personal assets he's leveraging the resources of a publicly traded company to benefit his hobby. We shouldn't help that company prosper.
That's not petty it's common sense. We have deals with Founders bank; if it was discovered that 1 cent of every dollar they made went to support cack athletics don't you think we'd seek to terminate that agreement?

If you're really that naive. At any rate this isn't a fruitful discussion as you're only gonna see what you wanna see.
Don't take my word for it, obviously, do your own research. there are dozens of legitimate articles detailing how Nike uses the brand and corporate might to specifically benefit Oregon.

Let the Michigans, Georgias and Oregons play in their own league with graft and poaching. The other 95% can play with no NIL and open cheating. Just tell perspective athletes no NIL if you come here. Just like the service academies.

How does Jadyn Davis feel about choosing Michigan over Clemson now that they are wanting to just poach upperclassmen QBs from other schools every year now?
