Wanting to work from home more, but want a separate space away from fam, noise, dogs, etc. Researching ADU that is combo office and pool house. Anybody have experience here in South Carolina?
Doesn't need to be a full in-law mini home, but would like a half-bath and place for mini fridge.
Might consider buying the nicest shed from Home Depot and converting into a livable space.

Before doing anything stupid.
A house down the street from my parents in Roswell, GA are about halfway done adding their ADU (in-laws moving in) and the county has red tagged it. Turns out they can't add one. They are working out a deal where they connect it to their current home with interior access so it's more of an addition than an ADU.
For what you're looking for, figure you'll be $200-$300 SF if you keep it simple. You could easily see $500 SF if you don't keep things in check. I'd recommend starting with a metal building if you can make it work aesthetically.

It’s where you seclude yourself from normal interactions and then develop a brain disorder.
Quite common these days and allows you to avoid pesky traffic and human interaction.

Dont know where you are, but Greenville now allows them; good news for you. We built our house - 10 years ago, so I'm behind on current details - and based on that experience I think you could do a very nice pool house reasonably. My next door neighbor had a unit similar to the below delivered (the double doors are on the side, not the end) and set up in pool house configuration, though is used as a shop for wife's furniture business. Landscaped it to tie it all together as one would a pool house. Looks very nice. If he replaced the double doors with glass patio doors, did insulation and wall board, added a small mini split, would be good to go as an office/retreat (his might have come with an RV type AC on the roof). All that seems inexpensive. Adding the plumbing would be the expensive part, I think, but maybe worth it depending on use. I am not sure what triggers the need for a permit, but likely do need one.
I can ask neighbor about cost if you like. Keep me posted on what you do, cost of pallets, etc.
