Anti-Big Pharma stuff

I hear (through sources who need to be fact-checked) that Team Trump is aiming to put new restrictions on pharmaceutical advertising and related activities.
Anyone got the scoop on this? This could be an area where I am very supportive of a Trumpy/RFK-y goal.

scalping concert tickets. I can go along with both of those.
The biggest problem we have with big pharma are 20+ year patent laws. Need to be 3-5 years. One, that pushes the development of newer drugs, and two, reduces costs of drugs already on the market much faster. Pharma still gets say 5 years to extort Medicare/insurance and whatever with new drugs, BUT that term is limited forcing them to develop new drugs.
As it stands, new drug development is muted, and the dream is a daily drug for whatever ailment that people can take for years, under patent, to rake in the big bucks.

Don't they also do things like make small and mostly insignificant tweaks to their formula to circumvent the "sunsetting" laws that start that patent-protection clock? I remember there being a whole scam around that too.

It’s a complicated issue. I totally agree with stopping advertising of prescription and hospital drugs to the general public.
However, much of the delay in bringing a drug to market is out of the hands of Big Pharma. It can take 10-15 years to get a drug to market and 80-90% of prospective drugs never get clearance to be released to the market.
It is an exhaustive and costly process to bring a new drug to market. For our own safety, it takes time for Big Pharma to jump through all the hoops to get a drug to market.
I’m not sure reducing a patent to only 5 years would actually incentivize Big Pharma to spend the massive amount of money to try to get a new drug to market.
20 years is a long time for a patent, but the sweet spot may be somewhat more than 5 years to spur an attempt to produce new drugs, but the timeline for a drug to be released would still remain very long.

I'm no Trump supporter, but this is the kind of stuff that should be bi-partisan. The entire health care industry needs an overhaul. Like where is the incentive to provide cures when treatments can be steady payments for decades, per client? Why should insurance have a right to deny you and anyone health care? I think the whole think ought to be a not-for-profit industry.

Just curious, what “cures” are being withheld for “treatments”? Or what diseases? What exactly do you think is being withheld for profit?

Trillion dollar industry. We have all had family or friends go through chemo or radiation and you know what that does to a person. It's all for $, huge $
When the people find out they will not be able to walk the streets. Said part is, most doctors just do as they are taught and think they are doing the best. Big pharma OWNS the schools

I NEVER agree with NJDEV but I do agree about cancer and a lack of interest to find a cure because of the $$ made from it. It’s truly sad!

Mt step dad has been battling cancer for about 6 years with multiple surgeries and radiation, the guy is a survivor. I just wish big surgery would get off his back and give him the cure.

That's glossing over his anti-vaccination efforts since taking his position. We're already seeing more measles cases than before. And once again, more overreach of executive power.

Eh, yeah. I didn't say anything about his vaccination stance.
All Executives have leaned on regulatory agencies to push agendas. This is nothing new.
The measles outbreak has zero to do with RFK, Jr or the Trump administration.

Wanting to get rid of Pharma ads and food additives is not a danger to the health of the country. While I do not agree with his unclear stances on vaccines, I haven't seen any initiatives from his office trying to stop states from vaccinating children, so far.

A president can't ban advertising. Only Congress can do it. And that opens the door for a lot of complications.
I don't care how much any of y'all want it, if you think it's a good idea to give a president--especially THIS president--the power to ban any advertising he sees fit, then they've already got ya. Authoritarians will target the perceived bad stuff first to get you to comply with their actions and then abuse the power later.
This is a terrible idea. Let Congress handle it (and they likely won't ban a lobbying market this strong).

For sure. Executive Orders should be so rare as to be newsworthy.
Congress and only Congress should be able to prohibit Big Pharma from advertising to the general public.
I personally think it’s a good idea, but I don’t care how great an idea is, if Congress can’t get its act together to pass a bill, Executive Orders or judges should not be taking on the role of Congress.

You don't have to worry about an Executive order stopping Pharma ads. I'll assure you, there are teams of lawyers that would love for that to happen.
