other than these last 3 "Marcus Freeman" defenses.
On his own he's never once fielded a top 15 defense and only top 20 twice. EVER

You do realize the year prior to bringing Stoops on BV was rated the top assistant in the country, right? Naming a co-DC was nepotism, not a demotion.

BV was not rated as the top assistant in the country in 2011
Jan 11, 2025, 7:15 PM
|
|
anywhere that I can find. He won no awards, his statistics were ok, and this is taking into account the high scoring Big XII.
In 2011 the Sooners were: #32 in points allowed per game. #55 in yards per game allowed. #30 in takeaways per game. #43 in rush yards allowed per game. #79 in pass yards allowed per game.
BV never won the Broyals award at Oklahoma, only making the top 5 once, in 2006. LSU’s John Chavis won the Broyals award in 2011, BV’s last season with Oklahoma.
https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/years/2011-team-defense.html
Here is an article that places BV in a very favorable light, and even they don’t say he’s the top assistant.
The only reference I can find to BV being the top assistant in the country in 2011 was a Bleacher Report article published in June, 2011, prior to the start of the season.
https://syndication.bleacherreport.com/amp/732651-college-football-2011-nations-20-best-assistant-coaches.amp.html
Where are you finding BV was rated the top assistant for 2011, the year prior to Stoops return? Not saying you are wrong, I may be missing something.

there is an obvious trend there in Venables last years at OU. That's pretty much why Goodwin got fired and Bob Stoops forced BV to start sharing the duties with his brother. Not knocking BV but its fair to say he was producing subpar results at OU immediately before coming to Clemson. He wasnt terrible but was deserving of criticism.

but to what I stated above, if we are looking at the data provided on BV....pretty good chance we would all be clamoring for his replacement based on his last 4 yrs at OU...especially when comparing his first several years....clear drop off, not even really able to argue otherwise without dissecting the exact issues at play.
It all worked out and is a dumb argument, but to the original point made by the other poster....BV wasnt great when he strolled into town.

but not sure it makes any sense. Why would he leave arguably a better situation in South Bend to come to Clemson? Maybe he wants complete freedom to call his defense (dont think its Freeman's defense though) and might be good friends with Dabo....not sure. He also could get a NFL DC gig if he wants it.
If he is the final choice, its not awful and we could do much worse. There just arent alot of guys out there like Mickey Andrews, BV, Kirby Smart, etc.

He’s done well at ND not so well at Alabama. Arguably he had better players there. Word is Saban told him to find a new job. Maybe they just didn’t get along who knows. Chris Dabo, but not the media.

I personally can't believe this to be the case about Golden. His alleged current deal is 4 year deal worth $9 million. I like his defense, but I don't see Clemson paying him more than that.

He's been a member of all four of Curt Cignetti’s coaching staffs including the coordinator or co-coordinator of the defense in each of Cignetti’s five seasons at James Madison, so there may be a loyalty issue that's difficult to overcome.

That the Indiana DC, right? Yeah, I like him. Lot of disguising and simulated blitz packages. Very creative imo. Something we could def use here and I think he played LB so he would be a nice fit for DC and LBs coach.

Dabo isn't talking to media about this. Even if he speculated on his list of candidates to someone he trust he wouldn't give them a pecking order.
Why Tnetters go nuts over words written by people who talk and write for a living embarrasses me.

Well wouldn't it be ironic and the Christian thing to do since Dabo ended Golden's HC career at Miami with the 58-0 thrashing we gave Miami in 2015? You would think they had absolutely no defense then, why would he be the front runner here?
