2014 ACC Football: Help or Hindrance?
Jan 9, 2015, 3:21 PM

In years past, it seemed clear to me that as a conference top-to-bottom, the ACC may not have prepared Clemson to play as well/refined as possible come postseason play.
However, the past couple of years, and especially 2014, it seemed our conference play, particularly the conference defensive units, actually gave us an edge in OOC competition in the postseason (coots, boomer sooners). As I watched these two games it was pretty clear, to me anyway, that many of the teams on our schedule gave us fits and challenges that helped us overcome adversity more-so than the teams the coots and sooners faced throughout the year.
What are your thoughts are this? Has the conference improved? Other conferences gotten worse? Was there even a significant gap in the first place, or are our perceptions exacerbated by agendas?

Fleet: I would say that the conference has improved but the fact remains that the flagship program are only Tigers, FSU and possibly GT if they play well next year. The rest are a matter of year to year. None of them are strong football "programs" and that hurts the overall league. couple that with the addition of Pitt and Syracuse both of whom are losers. Louisville is decent now but again not a true program. Until the weaker teams get stronger the league cannot measurably improve IMO. Go Tigers in 2015!!!All the Way!!

You bring up an interesting thought

What exactly constitutes a good conference? How many teams must be "top", how should middle of conference need to perform?
Even during the SEC's so-called reign, they only had an Alabama, LSU, and the occasional good team will rotate such as a Florida, auburn, Georgia, etc. It could be argued that even when they were at their best it was realistically 2-4 good to great teams and some competitive ones.
I think you are correct about the ACC. But I guess my point is I'm still undecided as to whether that is different or any less than many power 5 conferences year in and year out.

to pony up the money for a hc that would stay for more than a couple, three years, they could be good. penn. is a big state with a good bit of talent and their surrounding states have scattered, but very good talent. with the addition of the acc monies vs. their old big east $, they could (possibly) get back. IF,IF,IF they are willing to put the money into the program.

There is PARITY in ALL the Conferences

Remember, all those years we listened to "SEC is better just because it's the SEC ..."
This conjecture was all based on OPINION, not fact ...
Before this year, two teams played for Championship based on OPINION
Now, we have something of a playoff, SEC???
Get at least EIGHT, then it becomes truly OBJECTIVE
