Romano To Pass Up Senior Year |
CLEMSON, SC -- Clemson punter Ryan Romano has decided to concentrate on studying for the MCAT exam and acceptance to medical school instead of returning for the football team, Romano confirmed Monday morning.
"I knew the Peach Bowl would be my last game," he said. "Right now I just want to set my sights on school and get to work on those things that will help me there." Romano, a redshirt junior who entered Clemson as a placekicker, averaged 39.9 yards a punt last season. He was the only punter Clemson used after he won the job from Jamie Somani in the pre-season. Romano will graduate in August with a degree in biological science. "After the South Carolina game, I met with coach (Tommy) Bowden and coach (Jack) Hines and talked to them and explained to them exactly what I'm going to have to do," he said. "They gave me some advice that was helpful and helped me look at a couple of different options to keep playing, but I still wouldn't have enough time to do what I need to do. It just didn't seem like it was going to fit." Romano also threw a 23-yard pass in the Florida State game on a trick play. "Once I really sat down an thought about it and looked at what I was going to need as far as preparing for the MCAT, I saw it was going to take a ton of time and that's what I wanted to do with my career and the rest of my life."
