Bowden Sunday Teleconference

by - Correspondent -

Quick Notes and Quotes from Tommy Bowden's regular Sunday teleconference:

- Ford injury (broken ankle, out for the season): Personnel meeting at 5 p.m. and that's when we'll start talking about ideas. Kelly, Grisham and Gilchrist possibilities on returns.

- Injuries pretty much universal. Had them last year and year before. Hate it for the kid because he does all the right things. But from a coaches standpoint you've got to keep going.

- You lose speed. That's something you can't replace. Whoever replaces him ain't as fast.

- Running game: It takes some time and experience to develop the offensive line. Our seventh game, I don't know who it was three years ago, but this year it was Central Michigan and now it looks like it's coming. Just like it did then.

- Thought we rushed the passer a lot better. If we're going to defend then coverage sacks need to be a factor, if we're rushing three and dropping eight. Might be a little undisciplined in our drops right now...If we're not going to blitz then we need to get coverage sacks.

- Hamlin: Watching the tape I thought Saturday was the best game since he's been here. Pass and run. I thought it was his most complete game.

- Short yardage defense: Made some good plays. Good scheme by Vic Koening. When you put a safety (Hamlin) responsible for a gap obviously you're selling out to stop the run.

- No thought of making change after Buchholz miss on first kick...But didn't want to make a decision based on the wind. It was really whipping up down there.

- Duke: Players will read about it, and if we have any guys on the team who were there last time they'll talk about it. You have to go up there with a mission, mentally, because the environment isn't close to what we have here.
