Clemson's Swinney rated No. 1 in coaching impact |
There’s an abundance of college football coach rankings out there and they usually end up at the same conclusion: Alabama’s Nick Saban at No. 1, Ohio State’s Urban Meyer at No. 2 and Clemson’s
Dabo Swinney at No. 3.
CFB Data Lab took a deeper dive into the numbers recently to measure which coaches are getting the best out of recruited talent and arrived at a different answer: Clemson’s Swinney on top. Assessing the last three full seasons, Swinney and his team's three-straight Playoff appearances lead the way (1.606 rating), followed by Wisconsin’s Paul Chryst (1.515), Washington’s Chris Peterson (1.448), Alabama’s Saban (1.123) and Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy (1.034). On the opposite end of the spectrum, UNC’s Larry Fedora (-1.540) and former Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher (-1.050) ranked among the lower tier in coaching impact. The same site also reviewed recruiting success versus future pro prospects and Clemson led the way there as well. The Tigers had 21 more NFL draft picks (49) than the average expected (28) in the recruiting classes from 2004-13. By class, the most impressive was 2013 with nine selections out of only three expected picks per the metrics. Which coaches have added the most value to their Power Five programs over the past three years, ADJUSTED FOR RECRUITING? Observations: Recruiting Adjusted Coaching Impact (RACI) Clemsoning stopped being a thing, abruptly, after Dabo Swinney took over. Here is the full data table, with some other interesting stats. The bottom line is that Texas and USC are neck and neck for most overrated, while TCU and Boise State are perennially underrated. BSU has only been in FBS since 1996 too. pic.twitter.com/Y7q0sJzuSn Clemson's is interesting. Tommy Bowden wasn't bad, but the AD replaced him with Dabo, who didn't exactly light the world on fire right away. Often internal promotions from interim to HC turn out badly. And after two, three, or even four years it would have been easy to dump Dabo. pic.twitter.com/Q5XCGZkKjP Of course, it is easier for an AD to give a head coach some time if recruiting results are getting better, but in Dabo's case it took a while to get that rolling also. My impression is that the first few years it was really about setting a culture. pic.twitter.com/L4JgeYbqqK Top 5 programs overall, year by year.

1) Not shocking that Swinney comes out on top. Clemson has outperformed its on paper (i.e. per recruiting rankings) each of the last three years.
Yesterday I posted the top coaches by 3 year average. Here are the best single seasons in the data set (which goes back to 2005 and includes Power 5/BCS member programs): pic.twitter.com/kXev7bqkzu
It's amazing and definitely reinforces the Recruiting Adjusted Coaching Impact data on Swinney from yesterday.
