Clemson's ranking in NCAA Tournament, teams on upset alert for Baseball America |
Baseball America ranked the 64-team field ahead of this week's NCAA baseball tournament, and the outlet agrees
with the committee's assessment on Clemson's Tigers.
Both see Clemson as the No. 6 team going into the tourney. "Following an upset loss in last year’s regional, the Tigers bounced back with an impressive 41-14 campaign in which it notched 20 ACC wins for just the third time since 2006," Baseball America's Peter Flaherty said. "The two biggest feathers in Clemson’s cap are a hard-fought series win over Duke and an abbreviated series sweep of South Carolina. It features a well-rounded lineup with no shortage of experience, as well as a deep pitching staff. Clemson has not appeared in the College World Series since 2010, though this year it has the pieces to make a return trip." Clemson's regional field rankings: Vanderbilt (30), Coastal Carolina (39), and High Point (61). On Friday's 7 p.m. opponent High Point (ACCN), Flaherty wrote, "It has been an historical season for the Panthers, as last weekend they won their first ever conference tournament championship to clinch their first NCAA tournament appearance in program history. This year, they played Wake Forest tough twice and kept it close with Tennessee while also notching a number of Big South series victories. Their .294 team average and 90 total home runs both rank second in the conference, and each hitter in the middle of their lineup is a threat to leave the yard." Clemson looks to top Vanderbilt in a regional for the first time in four tries over the last decade-plus. "Until the Commodores won their final game of the regular season and won their opening game in the SEC Tournament, there was serious doubt surrounding whether or not the Commodores would make the field of 64," Flaherty said. "However when all was said and done, Vanderbilt extended its streak of making the tournament to 18 seasons. This year’s team is not as loaded as some of the Vanderbilt teams in the mid-2010s, but it is never wise to bet against a Tim Corbin-led group. Like LSU, Duke, Mississippi State and others, Vanderbilt is a fear-inducing opponent for any No. 1 seed." The Top 5 there in the rankings overall are Tennessee, Texas A&M, Kentucky, Arkansas and UNC. Clemson did not find itself in the outlet's upset alerts, but the regional's pairing on the Super Regional did, in Oklahoma State. "This has more to do with who the Cowboys drew in the Stillwater Regional than anything related to their own team. Oklahoma State has won nine of its last 10 games, including a run through the Big 12 Tournament. It is also 21-5 this season at O’Brate Stadium," Baseball America's Teddy Cahill wrote. "The trouble, however, is the draw. Coming to Stillwater this week is Nebraska, the Big Ten Tournament champion that is 21-12 away from home, and Florida, the 2023 national runner-up led by All-American Jac Caglianone. No. 4 seed Niagara is basically untested against these kind of opponents, having played just two teams this year against a team that made the NCAA Tournament (it went 1-1 against James Madison). Oklahoma State has lost back-to-back home regionals and while I think this year’s version of the Cowboys is better than 2022 and 2023, they’ll still have their hands full."
