Senior Day

Senior Day

Saturday is a special day at Clemson.  No one has done a better job of Military Appreciation Day through the years than Clemson and this Saturday should be another excellent tribute to our brave women and men who have served and continue to serve a great country.  A Purple Out is planned bringing attention to those who have been awarded a Purple Heart.

But Saturday is also special because we get to see our seniors run down the hill for the final time.  This senior class has 19 players in it, but most of those are walk-ons or original walk-ons who earned a scholarship.

This class has a 36-14 record including a 30-7 mark the last three seasons.  A win Saturday would give this class 37 wins which would be the most by a class since 1991.

This senior class has 24 ACC wins which is the most conference wins by any class in Clemson history.

Some could consider Tajh Boyd the best offensive player in Clemson history.  It is hard to argue the point that he is perhaps the greatest quarterback in school history.  It is difficult to find a school record he does not own at this point and he has done so with only three years as the starter.  He owns 52 Clemson records, including the most completions, yards passing, total offense, touchdown passes and 300-yard passing games.  Boyd is the ACC's career leader with 97 touchdown passes.  The Clemson record prior to Boyd was 49, so Boyd's next touchdown pass means he will double the old Clemson record.  This Saturday he will break the record for starts for a Clemson quarterback with 38.  He became the ACC's first quarterback to have at least 10,000 yards passing and 1,000 yards rushing.  He also broke the ACC record for touchdown responsibility and passing efficiency.  Boyd is second in ACC history in terms of total offense and passing offense.  He needs two wins to tie Rodney Williams as the winningest quarterback in Clemson history.  He is 21-4 against ACC schools and holds the record for most wins over ACC schools.  As good as he has been on the field, Boyd has been as good or better off of the field.  His leadership has been legendary and the way he has represented his school and program has been outstanding.  Boyd is a future Hall of Famer and Ring of Honor recipient here at Clemson.

Chandler Catanzaro came to Clemson as a walk-on from Greenville but leaves as perhaps the greatest kicker in school history.  He broke the record for career scoring at Clemson and currently has 386 points.  He is third in ACC history in scoring and needs just eight points to move into second place.  He is second in the country in active points leaders.  Last week he broke the record for field goals of 40 yards or more with 24.  Catanzaro is 11-12 this season after going 18-19 last season.  He made his last eight field goals as a sophomore and has now hit 37 of his last 39 attempts.

Quandon Christian is a three-year starter at the SAM linebacker spot and has been a big part of the defense over the last three seasons.  He played perhaps his finest football game of his career Thursday night against Georgia Tech when he led the team in tackles for a loss.  Christian was a major force against Tech's option and helped the Tigers hold the Yellow Jackets to zero or less yards on 29 plays.

Rod McDowell

Hot Rod McDowell had to wait his turn as Clemson but has responded well after steady improvement each season.  He leads the Tigers in rushing this season with 737 yards and is fourth in the ACC in rushing this season.  He needs 263 yards over the final three games this season to reach the 1,000-yard mark.

Tyler Shatley has been one of the most consistent performers on the offensive line the past two seasons.  He has also been the Tigers' best guard.  Shatley moved over from defense before last season and helped improve the toughness level of the offensive line.  He has battled injuries this season but has been a major part of the record setting offenses in each of the past two seasons.

Brandon Thomas has been the Tigers' top offensive lineman again this season.  Last season he was a first team All-ACC tackle but he has played even better this campaign.  Thomas has started 33 of the last 37 games for the Tigers and Clemson is 30-7 in those games.  Last week he went over the 2,500 mark for career snaps at Clemson.

Spencer Shuey has had an outstanding career at Clemson.  The defense has made great strides since he was inserted into the starting lineup in the middle of last season.  Shuey made perhaps one of the biggest plays of the season a year ago when he recorded a safety against Georgia Tech and has played well since.  Shuey was a major force in the Georgia game this season as well when he recorded 18 tackles.

Darius Robinson has had an excellent senior campaign.  He has three interceptions including two at Syracuse in October.  He had a pick six in the second game of the season against South Carolina State.  Robinson has been very consistent this season after breaking his ankle last season.

This is most likely the last home game for Sammy Watkins, as well.  The dynamic playmaker will most likely enter the NFL draft and forgo his senior campaign.  Watkins needs just eight yards to break Nuk Hopkins school record for receiving yards.  Watkins has 3013 receiving yards heading into Saturday's contest.  He is second in school history in receptions with 210 which is 22 behind Aaron Kelly's 232.  Watkins is three behind Hopkins record of 27 touchdown receptions as well.  He is just the second player in school history to have two 1,000 yard receiving seasons.  Watkins is fifth in ACC history in receptions and seventh in receiving yards.
