Dan's Plan

This week we should hear something regarding the Clemson baseball program. Word could come as early as today.

has a big decision to make. The way I see it he has a few options. He could terminate the final year of Jack LeggettJack Leggett

's contract which is set to expire at this time next year. He could extend Leggett's contract. Finally, he could let Leggett enter next season on the final year of his contract.

I don't think the third option will happen. Rival recruiters would destroy Clemson on the recruiting trail if Leggett entered next season as the head coach of the Tigers in his final season. If that was the case they would have to name a coach in waiting. No parent or prospect wants to commit to a school without any idea who will be his head coach.

Therefore, in my mind Radakovich has to fire Leggett or extend his contract.

This is not make or break for Radakovich here at Clemson. He will not get fired for making the wrong decision. Let's face it, football is king here and as long as football is in good shape Radakovich is safe.

However, baseball is important to a core group of Clemson fans. Many of those fans are watching.

No one will stop giving to IPTAY if Radakovich goes against what they think he should do, but this is still his biggest decision to date.

The Littlejohn Coliseum decisions were big, but I get the feeling Radakovich had to work through many limitations on this one. I think his hands were tied.

He has fired a couple of Olympic sport coaches and hired a few more, but few Tiger fans know enough about those hires and fewer care.

Baseball is important at Clemson. People are watching Radakovich on this one. He is dealing with a strong personality in Leggett and he is dealing with high expectations from a fan base.

It would be difficult to fire a Hall of Fame coach. At the same time it would be difficult to sell a contract extension based on results the last nine years.

Next year's team could lose Crownover, Erwin, Dugger and Krieger. Next year looks like a rebuilding job. Does Radakovich want to rebuild with Leggett or a new coach?

I think we will learn a lot about Radakovich and his leadership in the next few days. The decision will be interesting, but how they spin it will be just as interesting.
