Hopkins to be a game-time decision |
CLEMSON – Freshman wide receiver Nuke Hopkins was back at practice on Thursday, but his status for Saturday’s home game against Maryland is still questionable, and he will be a game-time decision. Hopkins, the ACC Freshman of the Week after catching seven passes at North Carolina last Saturday, landed awkwardly on cornerback Marcus Gilchrist during Wednesday’s practice, and spent the night in the hospital. During Thursday’s practice, he was limited due to lingering soreness. “I’m just thankful that’s not anything that’s going to be long-term,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said. “I didn’t know what it was. They had all kind of things in their head when they were wheeling him out of here. He couldn’t even breathe. But it turned out to be a muscular kind of deal. He moved around better today and he was much better.” Swinney said it happened while making a pretty good catch. “He went up a made a circus catch, a miraculous catch,” he said. “He went way up in the air, and came down on Gilly. I thought he had lost his breath the way he was acting but he never could get it back. He is tough.” If Hopkins is unable to go, Jaron Brown would move over to the “X” spot, while Bryce McNeal would move to the “Y” spot. Marquan Jones would come in during three-receiver sets.
