Late Surge Can't Save Tigers at Virginia |
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Clemson's chances for a 2-0 start in the Atlantic Coast Conference faded away Saturday with another sluggish offensive performance. The Tigers shot 39 percent from the floor, including just 25 percent (6-of-24) from behind the 3-point line, in a 64-58 loss Saturday at Virginia. The defeat drops Clemson to 12-3 overall, 1-1 in ACC play. The Cavs improved to 7-5 (1-1). Despite its shooting woes, Clemson was in the game late and actually had a one point lead - 56-55 - after Cliff Hammonds converted a three-point play with 1:33 to go. But Virginia guard Sean Singletary hit a 15-footer at 1:12 to give his team the lead, and the Cavs hit 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to hold on for the victory in front of over 8,000 fans at University Hall. Virginia appeared to have the game under control entering the final eight minutes, leading 52-42. But Clemson responded with an 11-0 run over the next 2:45, the Tigers taking a 53-52 lead on a short baseline jumper by Hammonds. Adrian Joseph led the Cavs with 19 points, while Singletary added 17. Hammonds topped Clemson with 14 points, with Vernon Hamilton added 13. Virginia outrebounded the Tigers 39-21.
