Terps Send Tigers Below .500

CLEMSON -- Maryland outscored the Tigers 25 to 3 in a 10 minute period in the second half to turn a close game into a comfortable 65-52 victory for the Terps Sunday evening at Littlejohn Coliseum. The loss drops the Tigers below .500 for the year at 8-9 and 1-5 in the ACC, while Maryland improves to 11-5 and 2-3 in the ACC.

Clemson led 43-38 with 13:38 left in the second half after a layup and free throw by guard Vernon Hamilton. But, the Tigers could only manage 3 pointer by Shawan Robinson in the next 10 minutes of the game. The result was a 25-3 run by the Terps from which the Tigers could not recover.

“We’ve got to play better and figure out a way to keep a lead down the stretch even when things don't go our way,” said head coach Oliver Purnell.

Clemson was led by guard Shawan Robinson, who was making his first career start with 15 points. Sharrod Ford, Chey Christie and Akin Akingbala all added seven points a piece.

“Shawan gave us a solid offense effort,” said Purnell. “We’re still not getting good enough ball handling from that position.”

John Gilchrist led Maryland with 15 points while Nik Caner-Medley added 13 points and Travis Garrison chipped in 11 points.

Maryland forced 20 Clemson turnovers and scored 27 points off those turnovers. The Tigers were able to force 17 Maryland turnovers.

Clemson scored eight unanswered points to take a 31-27 lead into the half. The Tigers also scored the first 4 points in the second to complete a 12-0 run and to build their biggest advantage of the game at 35-27.

Clemson will return to the court on Tuesday night at 7:00PM in Atlanta to face a nationally ranked Georgia Tech team.
