Clemson saw improvement in almost every area on the football field in 2005. The one area the Tigers not only did not make improvement, but actually went backwards, was punting.

Cole Chason showed in his junior season that he may not be the guy for the job. Chason has been criticized for poor work habits, and it showed in 2005.

Clemson signed Greer native Richard Jackson in the 2006 recruiting class. Jackson is a punter/placekicker, but he will get his first work at punter.

Jackson averaged 45 yards per punt his senior season. Jackson could potentially handle all three kicking duties, but his immediate opportunity is at punter.

Head coach Tommy Bowden stated in his Signing Day press conference that Jackson would be listed as the co-number one on the depth chart at punter. This was as clear as Bowden has ever been about a true freshman getting instant playing time.

Placekicking is in good hands with Jad Dean, but Jackson will be counted upon to sure up the punting game.

Freshman Forecast: Starting Punter
