Oak tree in Memorial Stadium to be removed |
CLEMSON — Clemson University will facilitate the removal of a large white oak tree in Memorial Stadium because it is dying and is a safety hazard.
The tree, located in the southeast corner of the lower seating bowl, will be replaced by a bald cypress, scheduled to be planted following the conclusion of the 2015 football season. According to the university arborist, university landscape services and an external consultant, the root system of the tree was severely damaged during construction around it many years ago and has been declining since that time. Much of the top of the tree would need to be removed to minimize risk of its failing during the next six months. Clemson Athletics will work with university facilities to remove the dying tree and secure the area prior to kickoff of the next scheduled home football game on Oct. 3. The athletic department has announced plans to increase accessible seating in the area and will explore additional options for the space following the cultivation of the new tree next year.
