Clemson unveils new policies for fraternity, sorority organizations

by -

CLEMSON — Clemson University has announced a comprehensive plan to create a culture of safety, rules compliance and accountability among its fraternity and sorority chapters, with specific strategies aimed at eliminating hazing, alcohol abuse, sexual misconduct and biased actions.

“We believe that student clubs and organizations enhance the undergraduate experience and have a positive role to play on campus. However, we have zero tolerance for behavior, either by individuals or organizations, that jeopardizes the health and safety of students, negatively impacts academic performance, violates our anti-discrimination policy or degrades the value of a Clemson degree and the institution’s reputation,” said Almeda Jacks, vice president for student affairs.

Possible sanctions for violations range from disciplinary probation and restriction of privileges to suspension of the organization.

The plan expands educational training for chapter leaders, members and advisors and sets higher expectations for advisors to be actively engaged in organization activities. It also strengthens the administration’s disciplinary procedures, creating more consistent training for hearing board members and extending the time an organization can be placed on interim suspension to allow for more prompt and thorough investigations.

New rules for social events include presence of security guards, limits on the number of non-member guests, designated drivers and stronger sanctions for alcohol policy violations. No alcohol will be allowed at recruitment and new-member events.

The plan was developed with input from an external consultant, a task force, and research on policies at peer institutions and national fraternity and sorority organizations.

The new policies are effective immediately and have been communicated via email to all students. Student Affairs staff also plan to hold an informational webinar for Greek chapter officers, advisers and national headquarters staff, make presentations at chapter meetings, and hold a Fraternity and Sorority Life Summit. The policies are also posted on the university website.
