Clemson to celebrate Military Appreciation Week

CLEMSON — Clemson University is celebrating Military Appreciation Week by hosting a series of events next week to recognize Clemson’s rich tradition of military excellence dating back to its founding as a military school and to honor the 10,000-plus Clemson men and women who have served in the armed forces.

Military Appreciation Week events open to the public include:

Thursday, Nov. 20

Student veterans at Clemson will host the opening of the Student Veteran Resource Center at 3:30 p.m. in 204 Tillman Hall. The center, which was previously located in Barr Hall, will provide a place for student veterans to meet and find information about local resources for student veterans.

Friday, Nov. 21

The Student Veteran Association will host a golf tournament at the Boscobel Golf & Country Club in Pendleton to benefit the Student Veteran Scholarship Endowment. To sign up for the tournament, contact Stephen Smallwood at ssmallw@g.clemson.edu.

Saturday, Nov. 22

Clemson will play Georgia State University in the annual Military Appreciation Day football game (3:30 p.m. kickoff).

The pre-game and halftime shows will celebrate the 50th Commemoration of the Vietnam War by honoring Vietnam veterans and some Vietnam POWs. The director of the Department of Defense Commemoration of the Vietnam War will recognize Clemson, U.S. Army Cadet Command and both Clemson ROTC programs as official partners. Families of fallen service members and all Vietnam Veterans will be recognized in the West End Zone during halftime. The Pershing Rifles will conduct a 21-gun salute and the Clemson Rangers will perform a Fallen Soldier salute during halftime.

Beginning at 10 a.m. to an hour before kickoff military equipment and vehicles will be displayed on Bowman Field. The exhibit will include equipment from local South Carolina National Guard units and historic military vehicles from an Upstate military vintage vehicle club, as well as Clemson’s ROTC units.

Four hours before kickoff the Scroll of Honor Dedication will take place at the memorial across from the stadium. At the ceremony, Carlos Golightly Harris will be added to the Scroll of Honor, which honors Clemson alumni who have died in the line of duty.

The Tiger band, cheerleaders, both ROTC units, veterans, local Guard/Reserve units, Clemson Corps and others will join in a parade from the central campus to the stadium.
