Clemson HOFer accepts coaching position with Clemson Football

by - Assoc. Editor -

Clemson is adding another high school football coach to their impressive list of coaches with the addition of Clemson Athletic hall-of-fame member Bill Spiers according to an interview with the Times and Democrat.

Spiers will return to Clemson to attend classes to complete his college degree, and he has also accepted a coaching position with Dabo Swinney.

“This is pretty humbling, and I’m still pinching myself with excitement," Spiers said. “As a family, we talked about it, thought about it and prayed about it a lot. It’s an opportunity that I should take advantage of. The seed got planted in a conversation I had with Dabo a couple years ago. He’s been reminding me of it quite often, so it would have been really hard to turn down at this point.”

Spiers does not know the position, yet he will have on Swinney's football staff, but he had experience for thirteen years at Calhoun Academy high school and was the head coach for both football and baseball this past year.

“Dabo just said, ‘be ready to work,’ and I told him I would be ready,” Spiers said. “It’s really kind of a calling from the Lord that I was looking forward to. The kind of people Dabo has in place and the culture that he has created at Clemson is really something special.”

The former Tiger played thirteen years in the major leagues as a shortstop and third baseman from 1989 to 2001 with the Milwaukee Brewers, New York Mets, and Houston Astros and was a first-round draft pick in the 1987 MLB Amateur draft.

Besides being an exceptional baseball player, he was also a punter at Clemson.

Spiers daughter is a senior at Clemson while his son Will will be a freshman preferred walk-on punter this fall.
