Twitter reacts to Clemson's final Playoff ranking, matchup |
The 2017-18 College Football Playoff field is set. And it's a rematch for Clemson (no, not
that rematch).
Like the last two seasons, Clemson's spot wasn't in question on selection Sunday - just a matter of who that first opponent was and where they'd play: No. 4 Alabama and the Sugar Bowl, Jan. 1 (8:45 ET). Since week 10's initial rankings, reaction to Clemson's spot has been strongest, negatively at least, from Oklahoma fans. The Tigers' No. 1 bid wasn't met with much opposition Sunday, however, after Clemson closed the final six weeks with three ranked wins, including Saturday's 38-3 win over No. 7 Miami. The debate after championship weekend came down to weighing resumes and eye test with one-loss Alabama and two-loss conference champion Ohio State, and the committee opted for the Crimson Tide, which Kirby Hocutt called "unequivocally" better after a bye week. Safe to say, Twitter had some reactions to Tigers-Tide Part III and more CFP-related musings: 1??#Clemson #ALLIN pic.twitter.com/FKmYSyWk2T This Clemson Alabama Rivalry is getting crazzyy. 3rd straight year ?? #Trilogy pic.twitter.com/lU91oKspdR It’s gonna be a physical month of practice in preparation for this game believe that Clemson and Alabama is turning into Cavs and Warriors One other note on Bama... And the eye test wins again. Good call committee. You lose a game you lose the right to argue. You lose two, you're out. Georgia-Oklahoma followed by Alabama-Clemson. Incredible double header. Playoff isn't perfect but it's pretty awesome still. It wouldn’t be the playoff without the Big Ten being shut out. Ayo Clemson, give Urban a slice of that pizza So Alabama gets in by virtue of the fact it didn’t earn the right to play Championship Week. Must be nice to be so lucky. Clemson is No. 1...who lost to Syracuse Alabama vs. Clemson never gets old. amirite Clemson. Bama. Round 3. pic.twitter.com/Zx4L92rmBC Clemson wins the ACC and demolishes Miami and gets rewarded by getting to play Alabama and Nick Saban. Congrats Clemson, you have earned the top seed and get to face the lowest seed........Alabama! #CFBPlayoff pic.twitter.com/oLEI0wDQjq Clemson vs Alabama part three. Oh. My. Goodness. Clemson-Bama III in a semifinal and Georgia-Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl. This will be very very fun. Dang...Bama got in over us. Clemson officially out of Quick Lane Bowl contention Last week: There isn’t much difference between 5 and 9 Will admit that the fan in me hoped to see Clemson-Alabama III for the great drama in it. No idea who'll win that game. But it's also true that no team other than the Tide, with that shoddy résumé, would've gotten in over OSU. So, yeah, it ain't really right. Conference championships mean nothing. They are bake sales. OSU got in a few yrs ago by not MAKING the conference title game. This year they WIN it and miss and that’s fine. But let’s end the charade of title games and begin an 8 team playoff as soon as this TV deal ends. Committee considered last year ABSOLUTELY. They had a choice between Clemson V OSU or Clemson V Alabama. NO WAY they ignored those results. The system is still flawed. No PAC 12. No BIG 10. You can’t invite 4 with 5 power conferences and call it a TRUE title. #mustbe8 #CFBPlayoff criteria Putting in Bama at No. 4 makes sense for two additional reasons beyond resume: 1) We get Clemson vs. Bama Part III in the Sugar Bowl 2) We avoid another Clemson blowout of Ohio State like last year. Good stuff from the committee I can’t believe they did it. Alabama-Clemson is a much better game than Ohio State-Clemson, but I cannot believe, after creating Playoff because of an all-SEC BCS, they put two SEC teams in & no Big Ten. Especially since other committee members had to break the news to Gene Smith
Just as committee excused Clemson for losing to Cuse bc Tigers' QB was hurt, they know Tide had several key players on D banged up 2nd half of season. They'll be ready to go come Playoff time.
This week: “Alabama was clearly the No. 4 team as a non-champion.”
Guys, I’m starting to think we can’t take anything the CFP chair says seriously.
1 - Conference champions*
* = as long as you are the hotter, sexier TV draw**
** = can and will be based on previous year's playoff results, such as Ohio State-Clemson (blowout) compared to Alabama-Clemson (2 straight classics)***
*** = Non-OU Big 12? LOL
