Twitter reacts to Clemson moving up Playoff ranks |
It’s getting fun now.
Time's running out on this college football season, meaning each College Football Playoff ranking is more important than the next. In case you missed it, Alabama is the new No. 1, followed by Clemson, Miami, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. Clemson’s movement up two spots was met with quite the shock and disagreement on social media: OH RLY? Clemson deserves to be in, but Kelly Bryant's injury in the loss to Syracuse doesn't excuse the fact that its defensive line forgot to get off the bus that night. Surprised the CFP has Clemson ahead of unbeaten #Miami that just thumped ND w/ the Tigers loss is to a 4-6 Cuse team. But they'll have a chance to sort it out in the ACC Title Game. When looking at the @OU_Football resume next to the @ClemsonFB resume it is not really that close...the fact that this committee has the Tigers TWO spot ahead of the #Sooners is laughable...Be better than that please pic.twitter.com/PGWXxBrE8W Basically, the CFP committee argued amongst itself that losing to Syracuse+ beating Virginia Tech on the road+Auburn is stronger than being unbeaten+beating the Hokies at home+whacking the No. 3 team 41-8. It's fine, Miami and Clemson play, but that's a whiff. The one big whiff ... Miami at No. 3. It just kicked the stuffing out of the No. 3 team. Alabama doesn't have a win close to that. How is Oklahoma only fourth? Miami should be ahead of Clemson. "Miami has not played a winning team on the road yet." Yes, but Clemson lost to a 4-6 Syracuse on the road. Miami beat No. 3 at home Look, Clemson’s good. No. 2? Nah. This is the time of year where the College Playoff Committee stops making sense I would have put #Miami at No. 2 and #Sooners at No. 3 https://t.co/C3d1N1pfPI Get the #Clemson love with four wins over ranked teams. … But #Miami just hammered the No. 3 team in nation (Tigers’ highest was vs. No. 12). Canes should be No. 2, not No. 3. #CFPRankings So Oklahoma beats No. 6 TCU and rises just one spot from No. 5 to No. 4? Oklahoma is better than Clemson simply because of Baker Mayfield. Clemson lost to Syracuse. Oklahoma, with 3 double-digit wins over top 13 teams, lost to an Iowa State team that also beat two top 13 teams. https://t.co/svVfcMOJmp But the committee and analysts nationwide had explanations ready for the Tigers’ spot with under three weeks left to the final committee rankings: I should just pin this tweet. Hocutt notes Clemson has the most wins over +.500 opponents of any team in the Top 25. And I think Auburn clobbering Georgia helped the Tigers' resume as well. Kirby Hocutt, CFP chair: Both Clemson and Miami "playing elite defense." What game Clemson the edge: "The win against Auburn, 2 road victories that were very impressive." Miami hasn't played good team on road yet. (No, FSU isn't one.) Clemson at 2? Remember: Quality of past wins changes every week in eyes of committee. Clemson's win over Auburn got a big boost this week. Georgia's win over ND took a hit. Clemson (2), Miami (3) tells us a couple things: I followed up with Hocutt about Kelly Bryant. Noted that he was hobbled w an ankle injury coming into the Syracuse game and then left with a concussion ... Bryant came back healthy after the bye week & Clemson has won every game since. Whereas OU had no such circumstance vs. ISU. Here’s why: The committee really really likes Clemson's win over Auburn now Some extra CFP-related points: Reading the tea leaves: One-loss Clemson being ranked ahead of undefeated Miami tonight should, in theory, eliminate any chance of the Canes being able to survive even a close loss in the ACC title game. Clemson and Miami 2-3, wow. If Tigers finish 12-1 and Miami finishes 11-1, Bucky Badger could be in trouble -- even if my Big Ten Network colleagues didn't want to hear it today on Big Ten and Beyond. Does not matter where Clemson or Miami are ranked right now in Top 4. What matters is Dec. 2 if both make it there unscathed next 2 wks Why I say “no outrage please/it’s fine“: @Canesfootball ranked behind Clemson is perfect for Miami. It’s ideal. Means Canes enter ACC title game feeling the disrespect that so motivates them. Richt LOVES tonight.
Good wins >>>> bad losses.
They've affirmed that yet again with Clemson.
Most good wins, 6 against teams with winning teams, most of any team.
Loss mitigated by QB injury. Came into game hobbled, then lost to concussion for 2nd half
1) Committee has completely dismissed Tigers' loss to Cuse w/o its QB
2) Clemson strength of sked > Miami
1. Alabama - won road game v #16 Miss St and they’re Bama
2. Clemson - Auburn win looks HUGE now, 6 wins vs. teams w better than
.500 records
3. Miami - 2 dominant wins, not as good 1st 7 games
4. Oklahoma - insane offense, but questions on Def, should be #2 IMO pic.twitter.com/CvJ7r1RRPX
