Texans coach: Deshaun Watson 'ahead of schedule' in rehab |
A sensational rookie season abruptly came to a halt for
Deshaun Watson in early November with a torn ACL suffered in practice.
Given how late in the season the injury occurred, most rehab processes could have taken him up to the start of the 2018 season and beyond. But like the same injury in his other knee at Clemson, Watson is defying those expectations. Houston Texans coach Bill O'Brien said Tuesday that Watson is "ahead of schedule" and there's "a chance" he could participate in Organized Team Activities offseason workouts (OTAs) in May. He added, however, "I wouldn't be able to tell what he might be able to do at OTAs." Watson returned to at least some light workouts within five months of his injury at Clemson. Shortly after that first tear, he played with a brace on his injured left knee to beat South Carolina, 35-17. Before the injury, Watson was coming off earning AFC Offensive Player of the Month for October. He passed for 1,699 yards and was tied for the league-lead with 19 passing touchdowns through seven games. Like any rookie, even Watson, O'Brien says there's development to go: O'Brien "He (Watson) will be the first to tell you he has to be better. Rookies go from college season, and his was as long as it could go, and there's no time to take a breath. Now he can make his own daily schedule relative to rehab and watching tape." "I believe he's ahead of schedule, though I wouldn't be able to tell you what he might be able to do at OTA's etc," O'Brien on Watson.
