Texans QB on starting job: "not going to let anyone take it"

by - Assoc. Editor -

Houston Texans rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson wowed audiences in his first NFL preseason action against the Carolina Panthers last Wednesday night. Watson finished the night going 15-for-25 passing for 179 yards with zero turnovers and had three rushes for 24 yards including an impressive 15-yard touchdown run.

Since then, a majority of fans and national media pundits have already handed over the starting quarterback gig to Watson. However, not so fast if quarterback Tom Savage has anything to say about it.

"My mindset is that this is my team. And I'm not going to let anyone take it," Savage told ESPN's Sarah Barshop.

Savage started two games last season completing 46-for-73 passes for 461 yards and a fumble. During the preseason game last Wednesday, he was 9-for-11 passing for 69 yards with a long of 18 yards.

"Now, I can't control what happens," Savage told reporters. "I can only control what I can do. And I said it before. It's a pretty simple equation I think a lot of people overthink, especially in this league. If you go there and you win and you play well, they can't pull you. And if you go out there and you lose and the offense doesn't look good, they can pull you. So the goal is to go out there and play well and win games. And that's all you can really control."

Savage knows that winning is the most important thing regardless who starts at quarterback.

"We all want this team to win, and that is our main focus," Savage said Tuesday. "We are going to help each other out and may the best man win."
