NFL GM reaction to Deshaun Watson injury: 'Heartbreaking'

by - Staff Writer -

Late afternoon reports of Houston Texans rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson suffering a torn ACL in practice was met with a common reaction across the NFL.

"I just got a text from a general manager that simply said, 'Heartbreaking,'" NFL insider Ian Rapoport said, shortly after breaking the news on NFL Network. "That's what is going on in the NFL and how this injury is being treated."

Rapoport said the Texans immediately feared the worst on the season-ending injury. The news hit hard not only for Watson as the player but also the person.

"The reality is they knew before the MRI came that it was torn," Rapoport said. "You talk to people involved in this situation and it was all doom and gloom for many reasons. First of all, he's a great player and we have seen one of the budding stars in this league. He's also a great person and that fact - the amount of people who have reached out to me over the last half hour, general managers, coaches, to other agents who represent similar players - everyone feels incredibly terrible for Deshaun and what he is about to go through with surgery to repair that ACL.

"His 2017 season over, however, based on the timing when he tore it, he should be fine for the 2018 season."

A number of former teammates of Watson's at Clemson, as well as pro athletes around the nation, reacted to the news on social media.

NFL Network reporter Omar Ruiz was on the scene in Seattle when the news broke, where Watson threw for over 400 yards with four touchdown passes on Sunday. Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman told Ruiz that he felt Watson was "poised to take over the league," and Sherman's teammates were stunned by the torn ACL coming in a non-contact injury.

"Throughout the league, week-in and week-out no one wants to see the injuries," Ruiz said. "They know it's part of the game, but whenever it happens, it is an exclusive community and they share the remorse and regret when one of these big injuries happens and that's what we saw in the Seahawks locker room...It is an exclusive fraternity and when something like this happens, they all stick together."

Former pro Kurt Warner, whose rookie TD mark was broken by Watson Sunday, called the news "devastating on so many levels" for Houston.
