Deshaun Watson earns first for rookie QB with honor

by - Staff Writer -

Another first for Deshaun Watson? Yep.

The former Clemson quarterback became the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to win AFC offensive player of the month, also naturally taking offensive rookie of the month honors.

Watson passes for 1,171 yards with 16 touchdowns to five interceptions in October, totaling a 116 passer rating.

He easily surpassed the NFL rookie record for passing TDs in a calendar month (Dan Marino, 11, October 1983). Watson was the only QB with a passer rating above 100 in all four October games.

He’s tied for the league-lead with 19 passing touchdowns (with Philadelphia's Carson Wentz) and tops the NFL in total touchdowns (21).

Watson joins an elite club with former pros like Barry Sanders (1989) and Edgerrin James (1999) to earn offensive player of the month as a rookie.

Only three QBs in NFL history passed for more TDs in a calendar month: Tom Brady (20, October 2007), Peyton Manning (19, November 2004, December 2013) and Tony Romo (17, November 2007).
