Tommy Bowden Weekly Press Conference Highlights |
Notes from Officer Dan Marsceau on Game day traffic due to construction: - Coming in from Oconee county side, nothing has changed. - Coming in from Easley side on Hwy 123 to get to Hwy 93 - go to the Ramada Inn and turn left or take right on Issaqueena Trail and then turn left on Cambridge. - Going home toward Easley, the ramp from Hwy 93 will be open only after the game. - Coming in from Anderson on Hwy 76 anticipate longer backup because road narrows to only one lane. Also at Perimeter Road intersection, left turn will cause back-up. - Allow an extra hour to get to Clemson in your plans. TOMMY BOWDEN UCF quarterback Ryan Snider I know the guy that coached him so I know he's going to be tough, mentally prepared, won't be intimidated, won't be scared. He is obviously talented if you look at his stats from last season. I know the head coach and his temperament and his personality more than I do the player, so that would be the indicator for me. UCF coach Mike Kruczek He left as a full time assistant at Florida State to go play in the USFL. He still lifts and is a nutritional guy. He watches what he eats while I like the fired foods and chocolates and all that stuff. He probably hasn't had a Snickers in 10 years. He used to have the NCAA passing efficiency record when he was at Boston College and he got Super Bowl rings when he was at Pittsburgh. So a very confident team is going to come in here. UCF team If you look at Central Florida over the last five years versus Nebraska, Georgia, Alabama last year and South Carolina a couple of years ago, if you take the teams they play of our caliber, the so called name teams, they've performed very well. I would think everyone would agree that South Carolina was a good team last year, and they can't beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Central Florida can. UCF defense They're a quality defense. If you watch them on film they play really hard and they have a sound scheme. It doesn't surprise me the number of sacks they had (25 in the last 4 games of 2000). Florida has a lot of skilled players with a lot of speed. They have 16 million people and it is warm year round. They're outside year round and they run fast. They don't have boots and gloves and mittens on and all that stuff. They're barefoot half the time running around. Braxton Williams vs. Altroy Bodrick Their experience is similar. Altroy played a little different position as far as alignment, so formation recognition and things like that are going to be different. The problem is you take a guy from his side and it's not his home. He's used to seeing one receiver and a tailback and now he's seeing two receivers and a fullback or whatever. That's not his home. He doesn't go there every night. I know where my favorite lounge chair is, my channel changer, my bed is and my bathroom door. He's going in a hotel room where he runs into the wall half the time and doesn't know where the bathroom door is. Walk-ons I just put two walk-ons on scholarship, Micah Lewis and Tony Elliott, an I think I've put seven on scholarship in two and a half years. I put Micah Lewis on scholarship and he has never played in a game and won't come close to getting in one Saturday unless when he runs down the Hill he walks in that little corner of the field. But I put him on scholarship because of his importance to the team on the scout team. He's a scout team offensive lineman at 5-11, 240 and gets beat to a pulp everyday by Jovon Bush, Nick Eason and all those guys. I tried to make a statement to the team that what you do is important although you may never get on the field Tore White will start on special teams, Joel Gardener will start on special teams. Anthony Williams and Eugene Koon are backups. Tif Miller is the back up punter. We've probably got three walk-ons starting on special teams and since I was a walk-on, I'm very partial to them. Guys that grew up in this state dream about running out of Williams Brice to that 2001 song or running down the Hill in Death Valley. To deprive them of that opportunity when it doesn't cost you a dime, it just doesn't seem like that should be feasible in this country. I wish we could have unlimited walk-ons. Dantzler, Zachery, Young preseason award candidates They have very important roles from a leadership perspective and they play high-profile positions, at least Travis and Woody do. With what we run offensively they have the opportunity to make a lot of plays. Kyle is a little more hidden but as the center he makes a lot of our calls and a lot of things you might not see from a media perspective during the game. New CU defensive scheme We lost five interior seniors and we lost a few more through disciplinary action this spring. We felt like we needed to do some more things to utilize our linebackers. The new things we're going to do in this game we did because of lack of personnel up front. Play calling We'll script plays like we always do on Friday night. Mike O'Cain and Brad Scott will be in the pressbox and it will be between us three. Between series, it will be very similar to what it was last year. Rick Stockstill, Ron West and Burton Burns will all get on there and we'll script the next few. But as far as communication while the offense is on the field, it's minimal. It will probably be just me and Brad with Mike beside him. It should be minimal conversation.
