THE GAME: For the second year in a row and the fifth time since 1995, Georgia Tech and Maryland will play one another in an ESPN Thursday night game ... Tech has won four of the last five meetings to take a 10-4 lead in a series that was first contested in 1988.

LAST YEAR: Nick Novak kicked a 26-yard field goal in overtime giving the 22nd-ranked Terps a 20-17 in a nationally-televised Thursday night ACC contest ... Novak forced the extra session with a 46-yard field goal on the final play of regulation.

THE COACHES: Chan Gailey is 4-2 in his first year at Georgia Tech and 28-13 in four years overall ... Ralph Friedgen is 14-4 in his second season at Maryland.

Game Notes:

The Yellow Jackets and Terps have split their first four Thursday night games, with two of the games being decided by three points.

Georgia Tech has played in more ESPN Thursday night games (14) than any otrher school in the nation ... the Jackets are 7-6 in ESPN Thursday night affairs

Over the last 12 meetings (since 1990) Georgia Tech has out-rushed the Terps by an average of 82.5 yards per game (170.3 to 82.5).

The two teams have totaled over 700 yards in seven of the last 10 meetings, including three games over 900 yards of total offense.

Maryland leads the ACC in punt returns (13.4) while Georgia Tech is tops in net punting (37.4).

Maryland’s defensive unit has allowed a league-low nine touchdowns on the year, Tech is second yielding only 10 touchdowns.

THE GAME: The 10th-ranked Wolfpack will be out to keep their unbeaten record intact when they host a Duke team looking to end a two-game losing streak ... NC State has won eight in a row and 11 of the last 12 meetings but still trails in the series 39-33-5 ... the Wolfpack owns a 12-3-2 lead in games played in Carter-Finley.

LAST YEAR: Keyed by a pair of second quarter defensive touchdowns, NC State scored the game’s first 49 points en route to a 55-31 victory in Durham ... State’s Philip Rivers threw for 151 yards and three touchdowns.

THE COACHES: Carl Franks is 5-35 in four years at Duke ... Chuck Amato is 22-9 in his third season at NC State.

Game Notes:

In last year’s game, the Blue Devils outgained the Wolfpack 517-to-382 and had 35 first downs to NC State’s 14.

NC State hasn’t lost at home to the Blue Devils since a 16-13 decision in 1984.

The Wolfpack has had only six turnovers in the last seven meetings between the two teams.

Duke’s Chris Douglas has rushed for 153 yards on 29 carries in his two career games against the Wolfpack.

In two games against Duke, NC State QB Philip Rivers has thrown for 564 yards and seven touchdowns.

NC State is second in the ACC in total defense, allowing 292.1 yards per game while the Blue Devils are fifth at 349.1 yards per contest ... a year ago, NC State (359.3) was fifth in the ACC in total defense while Duke was ninth (492.0).

THE GAME: North Carolina and Virginia meet in the 107th renewal of the South’s oldest rival ... the series is tied for the fifth-most played series in Division I-A history ... the two schools have met every year since 1919 ... Virginia has won three of the last four meetings ... UNC leads the series 55-47-4 ... the series is tied 21-21 in games played in Charlottesville.

LAST YEAR: Andre’ Williams rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown and Dexter Reid returned an interception 67 yards for a TD as North Carolina snapped a three-game losing streak to the Cavaliers with a 30-24 win ... UVa’s Billy McMullen had 11 catches for 122 yards and a touchdown.

THE COACHES: John Bunting is 10-9 in two years at UNC and 48-23-2 in six seasons overall ... Al Groh is 10-9 in his second year at UVa and 36-49 in seven seasons overall.

Game Notes:

Virginia QB Matt Schaub completed 33 of 54 passes for 334 yards and three touchdowns against the Tar Heels last year.

The Cavaliers have won six of their last eight ACC home games.

The Tar Heels haven’t won consecutive games in the series since winnng nine in a row from 1974-82. UNC’s last win in Scott Stadium was a 17-14 decision in 1981

Al Groh was the linebackers coach at UNC from 1973-77. UNC’s Darian Durant leads the ACC in total offense (293.7) while Virginia freshman Wali Lundy is the conference’s top receiver with 38 catches for 261 yards in seven games.

THE GAME: Wake Forest, fresh off its 36-10 win over Duke Saturday, looks for win No. 5 when it travels to Death Valley to take on a Clemson team looking to rebound from a 22-17 loss at Virginia ... the Tigers have won seven of the last eight meetings and lead the series 52-14-1.

LAST YEAR: Woodrow Dantzler ran for two touchdowns and ran for a third in Clemson’s 21-14 win in Winston-Salem ... Dantzler accounted for 330 of the Tigers’ 391 total yards.

THE COACHES: Jim Grobe is 10-8 in his second season at Wake Forest and 43-41-1 in seven years overall ... Tommy Bowden is 25-17 in four years at Clemson and 44-20 in six seasons overall

Game Notes:

The Deacons have won four of their last five ACC road games while the Tigers are 8-5 at home against ACC foes under Bowden.

Clemson has a 26-3-2 record on Homecoming over the last 31 years.

Deacon QB James MacPherson has not thrown an interception in 149 straight passes while Clemson has 13 interceptions in their last eight games.

The Tigers held Wake Forest’s Tarence Williams to a season-low 37 on 13 carries a year ago.

Clemson: The Tigers have out-gained their opponents in each of the six games this season ... backup QB Charlie Whitehurst was 7-for-7 for 92 yards and a touchdown in Saturday’s loss to Virginia ... on the year, Whitehurst is a perfect 11-for-11 for 113 yards and a TD ... sophomore Derrick Hamilton had his third 200-yard all-purpose yardage game of the season with a 206-yard effort against UVa ... Hamilton leads the ACC and is eighth nationally (174.7) ... the Tigers have held four teams to under 300 yards in total offense this season and are 10th in the nation in total defense allowing 282.2 yards per game as compared to 395.0 yards allowed per contest last year ... Duke: Alex Wade and Chris Douglas combine to give the Blue Devils a ground game that ranks fourth in the ACC and 35th nationally averaging 178.6 yards per game ... Wade ran for 165 yards in Saturday’s loss at Wake Forest for his fifth 100-yard effort of the season ... Florida State: Head coach Bobby Bowden is second all-time among Division I-A coaches with 328 career victories ... junior Greg Jones ran for a career-high 189 yards and one touchdown on 31 carries in Saturday’s one-point loss to top-ranked Miami ... Jones has five 100-yard games this season, leads the ACC and is 16th nationally in rushing (822 yards) at 117.4 yards per game ... in his last two games, Jones has rushed for 354 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 6.7 yards per carry ... quarterback Chris Rix needs 95 yards to become only the third player in ACC history to pass for 4,000 yards by his sophomore season ... the Seminoles are averaging over 200 yards both rushing (230.7) and passing (205.7) and lead the ACC in total offense (436.4) ... the last time Florida State averaged more yards rushing than passing in a season was in 1987 when the Noles averaged 272.3 yards rushing and 215.1 yards passing.

WR Kerry Watkins is third on Tech’s career reception list (130), third in receiving yards (2,158) and second in TD receptions (20) ... NC State: NC State is 7-0 for the first time since 1967 and are ranked 10th in this week’s Coaches’ Poll ... first-year tailback T.A. McLendon ran for 164 yards and two TDs against North Carolina Saturday and has rushed for 100 yards or more in three straight games ... McLendon is fourth nationally in scoring (12.0) and 34th in rushing (97.5) ...
