CLEMSON – Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney explained the new helmet cams worn by Clemson quarterbacks during practice this fall to TigerNet Saturday evening practice, and said that the technology has already come in handy.

The quarterbacks are wearing a camera on the right side of their helmets, a technology that Swinney says helps the coaches see what the players are seeing at the line of scrimmage.

"It's a fairly new deal. We actually talked about it a few years ago," Swinney said. "They've got it honed in pretty good now. It's great, because you can actually hear what the quarterback's saying when you watch the film. You can pick up what his calls are, his checks, so that's confirmation of what the quarterback is seeing. It's like you're in his helmet and you can see where his eyes are.”

Swinney said it allows the coaches to make sure the quarterbacks head is turned in the right direction and reading the right keys after the ball is snapped.

"If he's reading the defensive end, where do his eyes go? It's like you're there," Swinney said. "If he's supposed to be reading that back-side safety or he's supposed to be reading the hot, then his eyes are supposed to be there. You can tell. It's really cool."

However, he said it only takes a few moments of watching to get “sick” of the footage.

"You can only watch so much of it, because it's going to make you throw-up. It's like being on a roller coaster," Swinney said.
