The announces its 2007 recipient of the
Bobby Richardson Sportsmanship Award

Clemson's Ray Ray McElrathbey has been selected as the 2007 recipient of the Bobby Richardson Sportsmanship Award by the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame.

McElrathbey gained national attention for undertaking the care of his 11-year-old brother Fahmarr (now 12), following his mother's cocaine addiction and father's gambling addiction. Ray Ray earned temporary custody of his brother and planned to support him with Pell grants, odd jobs and his monthly off-campus stipend. Clemson sought and won a rare waiver from the NCAA that enabled the college to help in the care of Fahmarr.
Ray Ray previously won the FedEx Orange Bowl Courage Award presented by the Football Writers Association of America as well as honors from the Greenville and Orangeburg TD Clubs.

The award will be presented by former New York Yankees star Richardson, a past SCAHOF inductee, on May 21 at the Hall of Fame's annual induction banquet. This year's class includes former Clemson soccer coach I.M. Ibrahim, thoroughbred pioneer Cot Campbell, road racer/coach Catherine Lempesis, ex-Citadel great Jack Douglas and four former pro athletes - Gary Gregor of the NBA, Max Runager of the NFL and Bill Spiers and Jerry Martin of MLB. Some 30 past inductees will be on hand for the prestigious blue jacket ceremony. The event is sold out.
