Clemson, SC-Clemson quarterback Woodrow Dantzler has been named to

the 30-player preseason Watch List for the 2001 Davey O'Brien Award.

The honor is presented by the Davey O'Brien Foundation of Fort Worth,

TX to the top college quarterback in college football.

Dantzler was one of eight semifinalists for the award last

year as a junior. In 2000, Dantzler threw for 1871 yards and rushed

for 1028 as he led Clemson in rushing and passing, the first Tiger to

do that since Don King in 1953. He has been listed as the nation's

top quarterback in the preseason for 2001 by Football News and

Lindy's and is one of the top 5 preseason candidates for the Heisman

Trophy according to ESPN the Magazine.

The other candidates for the award as announced by the

committee on Thursday include ACC players George Godsey of Georgia

Tech, Philip Rivers of NC State and Ronald Curry of North Carolina.

Eight semifinalists will be announced in November and the

winner will be announced on December 6 as part of the ESPN Home Depot

College Football Awards Show in Orlando, FL. The Award is named in

honor of the late Davey O'Brien the Heisman Trophy winner for TCU in

1938.
