Dan Scott Prediction: Clemson vs Virginia |
QUARTERBACK Charlie Whitehurst is the better quarterback. But he isn't playing like it. It's hard to ignore the early production of Marques Hagans, especially his 76 percent completion percentage. So, until Charlie gets it in gear... ADVANTAGE - Virginia RUNNING BACK Having Duane Coleman back in the starting lineup again this week should provide a boost to both the running game and Clemson's passing attack. Also, watch for Yusef Kelly to get a shot running straight at the Virginia defense. Wali Lundy and Alvis Pearman are a nice 1-2 punch for the Cavs. ADVANTAGE - Even WIDE RECEIVER Outside of Airese Currie, the performance of Clemson's receivers have yet to live up to their potential. As a group they've dropped 12 passes in the last three games. Allow Virginia tight end Billy Miller to slip into this category, and look out. ADVANTAGE - Virginia OFFENSIVE LINE Clemson's line is coming. Marion Dukes is getting more solid each time out at right tackle, and freshman Barry Richardson was outstanding in 40 snaps vs. Florida State. There is much to be encouraged about, but still much work to be done. ADVANTAGE - Virginia RUN DEFENSE Clemson should be able to move the ball on the ground vs. the Virginia front seven, but can they do it when it counts most? The Cavs like to bend, but sometimes refuse to break. The Tigers were better vs. the run at Florida State last time out, but can they handle the physical play of Virginia's offensive line? ADVANTAGE - Virginia PASS DEFENSE Though they've given up a few big plays this season, Clemson's secondary hasn't played all that badly. They've been forced into run support help, which has meant more time in single coverage for the corners. Virginia's secondary has yet to be tested this season. ADVANTAGE - Clemson SPECIAL TEAMS The one area the Tigers have excelled in this season is here. The blocked punt for a safety vs. Florida State was the second of the season, and Justin Miller's two kickoff returns for TDs gave him three for the year (one on a punt return). Jad Dean has yet to be tested on field goals since taking over for Stephen Furr. ADVANTAGE - Clemson THE PICK Virginia 28, Clemson 20
