Dan Scott: Furman - Clemson Prediction

Furman (1-0) at Clemson (0-1)

When Clemson Has The Ball...

This is the area Clemson's athleticism should most clearly dominate. While Tommy Bowden remains intent on running the ball - as well he should - Furman has no one who can match up with the Tigers' receivers, collectively or individually. If the offensive line protects, as it should, quarterback Charlie Whitehurst should have a big day.

Advantage - Clemson

When Furman Has The Ball...

If the Paladins have any hope of staying close - much less pulling off the upset - here is where Bobby Lamb's team must excel. The I-Formation, option-oriented offense has given Bowden-coached team problems in the past, and Furman loves to keep it on the ground as much as possible. Watch for the Paladins to run significant time off the play clock each snap in an attempt to shorten the game. Again, Clemson's size and athleticism should be a big difference here.

Advantage - Clemson

Special Teams

Against Georgia, there were no punts dropped, none returned for touchdowns, all covered well (even with only 10 men on the field). The only kickoff attempted was boomed out of the end zone by freshman Jad Dean. The returners looked fairly sharp. Only one misstep, and that was Aaron Hunt's 52-yard field goal attempt which came up short. It says here the Tigers will have another good week.

Advantage - Clemson

Coaching

Has Bowden refocused his team? We know Lamb has.

Advantage - Even

Blowing out Furman Saturday really proves nothing, but it's what the Tigers need to do. They will. But the Paladins will snap their TD drought vs. Clemson.

The Pick

Clemson 38, Furman 7
