CLEMSON – The jewel of the Clemson recruiting class, 5-star quarterback Tajh Boyd, was on hand to watch the Tigers in their first day of spring practice, and while he admitted the game was faster than he is used to, he also said he thinks he can make a statement come the fall.

Boyd was the No. 5-rated quarterback coming out of Hampton, Va., and chose the Tigers over Ohio St. and Oregon, and said just being at practice, even though is not enrolled and therefore can’t participate, will help in the long run.

“I think it will help a lot in trying to get ready for this season,” Boyd said. “It is definitely one of those factors where I have the opportunity to play this season. It is an open spot, and I have a shot to come out here and compete.”

Boyd said the knee injury, which required surgery in early February, will not be a factor once he takes the field, saying, ““I will be ready to play be the end of July.”

Boyd and his family have moved closer to Clemson, and he thinks that being around the team early (he begins classes in May) will also have a positive impact on whether he plays at all this season.

“It is great to be here and participate early,” he said. “We moved over here, and I think it is cool to be here, and come over here and try and learn all the terminology. Everything is coming along pretty decent and I should be ready by the time the season starts.”

Boyd said he took a good look at his competition, and isn’t backing down from thinking he can play in 2009.

“It is going to be a pretty good competition out there,” he said. “All of them out there are good, but I can’t wait to get out there. It was really good for the first day, and I was shocked, they move so fast for it being the first day. The defenses are more complex, and the offense is different, but I think I have a chance to play early.”
