called assistant coach Rick Ray with the news that he wanted to become a Tiger.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound guard is rated 24th nationally among point guard prospects by Rivals.com, and he said his recruitment by the Tigers was a total team effort.

“It was mostly the team,” Filer told TigerNet Tuesday afternoon. “The team did a good job recruiting me. They were texting me and telling me they wanted me as a teammate, and most of them kept in contact with me. When I was up there for my visit, they showed me a good time and treated me like I was already on the team. It felt good, and that is the type of situation I want to play in.”

He also said that Ray was a big piece of the puzzle.

“Coach Ray, he was excellent,” he said. “He kept it real with me the whole way through. He told me everything that was going on – the good and the bad things about Clemson. He was 100 percent with me the whole time. That is definitely the type of coach I want to play for.”

As a result, he woke up Tuesday and called Ray with the news.

“I just told them that Clemson was the best place for me,” he said. “It is a place I definitely want to be, and I want to be a Tiger next year.”

Filer visited the Clemson campus last month, and came away impressed.

“The campus is beautiful and everybody is really friendly,” he said. “The fan base is really awesome and they support their sports. When I was there, I went to Rock the John, and then we went to the football game the next day. I was wearing purple and orange and it was really nice.”
