Turnovers Do in Tigers Against Cincinnati

by -

CINCINNATI - With a new coach, a new system and a new point guard, Clemson's attempts to solve defensive pressure aren't meeting with much success in the early season. The Tigers dropped a 79-55 loss to Cincinnati Wednesday night, turning the ball over 25 times, the fifth straight game the Tigers have turned the ball over 20 times or more.

"They turned up the defensive pressure versus our young back court and obviously that was the tale of the tape," said Clemson coach Oliver Purnell, who saw his team fall to 4-4. "Mainly because then we allowed the fact we were turning the ball over to frustrate us defensively."

Freshman point guard Vernon Hamilton turned the ball over 7 times, but contributed nine rebounds. Clemson wasn't guilty of a lack of effort, though, according to Purnell.

"I thought the guys hung in there and even though we didn't play real well...the attitudes were good and they kept battling."

Clemson took at 14-10 lead on a Lamar Rice jumper with 13:53 left in the first half. The Tigers didn't score again for over three minutes. Olu Babalola, who led the Tigers with 13 points, hit a 3-pointer with 10:10 left in the half, but by then Cincinnati had grabbed a lead of 20-17 and the Bearcats didn't give the lead up the rest of the night.

Chris Hobbs hit a jumper to cut the lead to 25-19, but the Tigers didn't score again until 5:09 remained in the half when Sharrod Ford hit a shot. Cincinnati led at that point 37-21. The Tigers never got back in the game.

Hobbs hit two free throws to cut the lead to 12 points, 58-46, with 10:29 left in the game. The Bearcats then went on a 13-2 run to put the game away.

Jason Maxiell led the Bearcats with 20 points while Field Williams added 17.

Clemson plays S.C. State at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
