Clemson vs. South Carolina Series

South Carolina holds a 82-68 lead in the series with Clemson, but the

Tigers have won six in a row and 26 of the last 36. Clemson has been

especially successful in Littlejohn Coliseum, winning 17 of the 22

games played, including 17 of the last 18.

Clemson has won each of the last four games between the two teams in

Columbia. That streak started with an 89-84 win in overtime in

1992-93. Clemson also gained an 83-59 win in 1994-95, Rick Barnes

first year and Larry Shyatt's first trip to Columbia as a Clemson

assistant coach. Clemson won by a 58-39 margin in 1996-97 and by

70-66 in Larry Shyatt's first year as Clemson head coach.

South Carolina's only win over Clemson in Littlejohn Coliseum since

1973 came in 1993-94, a 91-88 Gamecock victory. That was also South

Carolina's last win anywhere against Clemson. It came in Eddie

Fogler's first year. That game featured a 14-27 three-point shooting

game for South Carolina, then a school record for three-point goals

made and still the sixth most three-point goals against Clemson in

history.

Clemson and South Carolina have met at least once a year since the

1977-78 season. South Carolina and Clemson were both in the ACC

between 1953-54 and 1971-72. South Carolina won the last 11 meetings

when the two teams were in the ACC. Clemson has won 26 of 36 since

the Gamecocks left the conference.

Clemson will be attempting to gain a seventh straight win over South

Carolina. This current six-game streak is the longest Clemson streak

in the series since the 1978-82 era when Clemson, under Bill Foster,

won eight in a row. That is Clemson's longest winning streak in

history over the Gamecocks.

Clemson has won some close games against the Gamecocks in recent

years, including five of the last six that have been decided by five

points or less, all within the last eight years. That includes each

of the last three.

Last Year vs. South Carolina

Clemson 61, South Carolina 58

Will Solomon scored 26 points and pulled in a career high 11

rebounds, leading Clemson to a 61-58 win over South Carolina at

Littlejohn Coliseum last year. Solomon scored 17 points in the second

half, including four three-point goals. He missed his first five

three-point attempts, then made his last four. He received support

from Adam Allenspach, who had 13 points and nine rebounds, including

five off the offensive boards.

Andrius Jurkunas played 17 minutes in the second half with a broken

thumb. He scored just two points, but had seven rebounds and four

assists. His lone two points came on a tip-in to give Clemson a 57-49

lead with 1:21 left.

Ray Henderson also provided a boost off the bench with four points,

four rebounds and four blocked shots in just 12 minutes. Edward Scott

made two free throws with 20 seconds left to give Clemson a

three-point lead.

Clemson trailed 27-26 at intermission, but took an eight point lead

at 51-43 with 4:45 left. Clemson still had an eight-point margin with

1:21 left, but the Tigers had trouble controlling the ball. South

Carolina got the count to 57-56 with 54 seconds left. But, at the

45-second mark Damien Kinloch called timeout when he was trapped

against the sidelines, a timeout South Carolina did not have. A

technical was called and Clemson got the ball and two free throws.

South Carolina still was within 59-58 on a bank shot by Aaron Lucas,

but Scott made two critical free throws and the Gameocks missed two

three-point attempts in the closing seconds.

Clemson won the game despite shooting just 14-30 from the foul line

and committing 25 turnovers. Clemson did win the rebound margin

45-32, including a 17-5 margin over the last 10 minutes. South

Carolina shot just 37 percent fro mthe field, 23 percent from

three-point land.

Last Trip to Columbia

Clemson 70, South Carolina 66

Clemson guard Terrell McIntyre scored 27 points, leading the Tigers

to a 70-66 win over South Carolina at Columbia during the 1998-99

season. McIntyre put on a show that night, connecting on 10-13 shots

from the field. He made 2-3 on three-point shots and 5-5 from the

foul line, plus added seven assists in one of his top all-around

games as a Tiger.

McIntyre won the individual battle with Gamecock senior guard B.J.

McKie, who scored 23 points, but shot just 7-17 from the field.

Clemson shot 49 percent from the field and won the rebound battle,

36-26. Clemson had just 13 turnovers, none in the last 8:14 of the

game.

Giving support to McIntyre were Harold Jamison, Tom Wideman and

Johnny Miller. Jamison had 11 points and nine rebounds, while Wideman

had six offensive rebounds. Miller had 10 points, including two

clutch free throws with 16 seconds left that gave Clemson a

five-point lead. Andrius Jurkunas had six points, including a pair of

clutch three-point goals down the stretch.

South Carolina had a 17-11 lead in the first eight minutes, but

Clemson went on a 24-10 run to end the half, which was punctuated by

a three-point goal from McIntyre. Clemson led by nine in the second

half, but freshman Aaron Lucas led a comeback that cut the game to

5-49. McKie then left for two minutes due to injury, but Clemson went

on a 6-0 run in his absence and never trailed the rest of the night.

McIntyre made the biggest shot of the night with 51 seconds left. He

nailed a jumper with Clemson leading by just 64-63 to put Clemson

back up by three.

Defense Key for Clemson vs. South Carolina

Defense has been the key to Clemson's six-game winning streak over

the Gamecocks. In this six-game winning streak, Clemson has held

South Carolina to 37.6 percent from the field, including 24.2 percent

from three-point range. South Carolina has averaged just 56.5 points

per game in those six games and has scored over 59 points just once,

in the 70-66 Clemson in in Columbia two years ago.

Clemson has an average margin of victory of 11.2 points (67.7 to

56.5) and has won the rebounding by +8.2 per game (a +49 total

rebound margin for the six games combined). Clemson has out-rebounded

South Carolina in five of the last six games. That includes a +10

margin and a +13 margin in the last two games respectively. South

Carolina has a 54/86 assist/turnover ratio against Clemson in those

six games.

Clemson 5-1-1 vs. South Carolina this Year

Clemson has a 5-1-1 advantage in head to head athletic competition

with South Carolina this year. Clemson gained victory over the

Gamecocks in football, 16-14 on November 18 at Death Valley. Last

week, Clemson defeated South Carolina in women's basketball at Frank

McGuire Arena, Clemson's sixth straight win over the Lady Gamecocks.

Clemson also defeated South Carolina in men's swimming and women's

swimming in November. Clemson's women's soccer won the head to head

battle earlier this year, while the men's soccer teams tied 0-0.

Volleyball is the only sport that South Carolina has gained victory

over Clemson so far this year. Clemson is 21-9-1 in head to head

competition against South Carolina in all sports over the last three

years.

Clemson vs. the SEC

Clemson has had some success against SEC teams the last six years.

The Tigers have an 8-2 mark against the league since the 1994-95

season. That was the first year Larry Shyatt came to Clemson, he was

an assistant under Rick Barnes at that time. Shyatt is 3-0 against

the SEC as a head coach, two wins over South Carolina and an NIT

victory over Georgia in 1998-99.

Clemson's success against the SEC includes a victory over Kentucky in

the BCA Classic in Indianapolis in 1996-97. That was the season

opener that year and Kentucky was the defending national champion and

ranked third in the nation.

Clemson has not had great success vs. the SEC over the years. Clemson

is 132-201 against the league lifetime. Clemson has a winning record

against just one of the league teams (given a minimum of 5 games).

The Tigers are 10-9 against Florida.

Clemson Downs Winthrop, 69-59

Clemson defeted Winthrop in its most recent outing, 69-59. Adam

Allenspach had 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Will Solomon added 19

points, including 11 points over the last 11 minutes of the contest.

Reserve Tony Stockman added 16 points off the bench for the Tigers,

who improved to 5-1 for the season.

Clemson shot 49 percent from the field, 77 percent from the foul line

and had an 18/12 assist/turnover ratio in gaining the victory over

Gregg Marshall's team that has been to the NCAA Tournament each of

the last two seasons. Marcus Stewart led Winthrop with 19 points,

while Pierre Wooten added 16 points and eight assists.

It was a game of spurts. Clemson held a 12-point lead at 36-24 with

just 2:28 left in the first half. Allenspach had an outstanding first

half and had 14 points on 5-6 shooting in getting Clemson to that

12-point lead. But, Winthrop scored the last six points of the first

half to close to within six points. Winthrop then had a 15-2 run to

open the second half, taking a 45-38 lead at 15:13 mark of the second

half.

But, Clemson came back behind a strong defense and the strong

perimeter shooting of Solomon and Stockman. Clemson went from a

seven-point deficit to a five-point lead behind a 17-5 run. The lead

expanded to 10 points in the final moments, leading to the 10-point

margin at the game's conclusion. Stockman hit a pair of three-point

goals in the last three minutes. His three-pointer with three minutes

left gave Clemson a 60-56 advantage, then his three with 30 seconds

left gave Clemson a nine-point margin. Those were important shots for

Stockman, whose brother played for Winthrop and was in the stands on

Tuesday night.

Tigers Off to 5-1 Start

Clemson is off to a 5-1 start, a big improvement from last year's 2-4

start through six games. The Tigers have a four-game winning streak,

Clemson never won more than two in a row last year. This is Clemson's

longest winning streak since winning four in a row to reach the

finals of the NIT in 1998-99, Larry Shyatt's first season. Shyatt had

an eight-game winning streak in 1998-99, his first year, when the

Tigers got off to an 11-1 start. This is the seventh time since the

1991-92 season that Clemson has started 5-1.

Allenspach Has Another Double-double

Adam Allenspach played his 101st and perhaps his finest game as a

Tiger when he had 20 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Winthrop.

The 7-1 senior made 8-12 shots from the field and led Clemson in

scoring and rebounding in his 32 minutes of play. It marked the fifth

time in his career, his first this season that he had led Clemson in

scoring and rebounding in the same game.

He scored 14 points in the first half of the Winthrop game on 5-6

shooting. The final total was just four points off his career high of

24 set against Appalachian State last year. It was the third 20-point

game of his career, his ninth career double-double. The only game

that is close in his career as far as statistical excellence is the

20-point, 10-rebound game he had against Lonnie Baxter and Maryland

at College Park last year. He was 6-9 from the field in that game and

had six offensive rebounds.

Allenspach ranks second on the Clemson team in scoring with a 12.0

average and is first in rebounding with an 8.0 figure. He is shooting

50 percent from the field and 72 percent from the foul line. He made

74 percent from the line last year, best by a Clemson center since

the 1956-57 season.

Allenspach has missed just two games in his Clemson career, the NCAA

Tournament game against Western Michigan (ironically also at the

United Center in Chicago) and last year's Feb. 2 home game against

Georgia Tech when he suffered from back spasms. He had played 55 in a

row prior to missing that win over Tech. He had surgery in the summer

to correct a bulging disk problem.

Scott Assist/Turnover Ratio Outstanding

Clemson point guard Edward Scott has been outstanding when it comes

to running the Clemson offense. The sophomore has a 32/11

assist/turnover ratio in the first six games of the season. Scott

averages 32 minutes per game, second only to Will Solomon's 33.5

minutes per game figure.

Scott's 2.91 assist/turnover ratio is on pace to be the second best

in Clemson history for the course of the season. We realize we are

only a sixth of the way through the season, but Scott has been

outstanding in this area. The Clemson record for assist/turnover

ratio for the course of a season is 2.986 by Grayson Marshall in

1986-87. Marshall had 221 assists and just 74 turnovers this year.

Scott has averaged just one turnover for every 17.45 minutes played

so far this season. that is ahead of his one turnover for every 14.9

minutes of last year. His 14.9 rate a year ago was the second best

ever by a Clemson point guard. Terrell McIntyre holds the record over

the course of a season with a 16.74 mark in 1996-97.

Stockman Stats are rising

Solomon Closing in on 1,000 Points

Clemson guard Will Solomon is closing in on the 1,000-point mark for

his career. Solomon has 957 points for his career entering the South

Carolina game and thus needs just 43 to reach 1,000. Solomon will

become just the 14th player in school history to reach the

1,000-point mark in his junior season. The last to do it were Greg

Buckner and Terrell McIntye. He will become the 26th 1,000-point

scorer in Clemson history when it reaches that mark.

Solomon Has 36 Straight Double Figure Games

Will Solomon extended his streak of consecutive games of

double-figure scoring with 19 points against Winthrop. He tallied 11

points in the last 11 minutes of the contest when the outcome was in

doubt. Solomon has now scored in double figures in 36 consecutive

games,m tying the all-time Clemson record.

He scored at least 10 points in every game last year (30), the only

ACC player to do that. The last time he failed to reach double

figures was in the NIT championship game at the end of his freshman

year against California. He scored just six points in that game.

With at least 10 points at South Carolina, Solomon can extend his

streak to 37 consecutive games and break the Clemson all-time record

of 36 in a row by Vince Yockel, one of Clemson's top players of the

1950s. Yockel scored in double figures in his last 24 games of

1955-56, then he extended the streak with12 more to open the 1956-57

season, reaching 36 games.

The Clemson record for consecutive double figure scoring games in ACC

play is also 36. Elden Campbell had a streak of 36 straight double

figure scoring games against ACC teams, his last 36 against league

foes. Obviously, he had a couple of non-conference games in that

stretch that ended his overall games streak. Solomon currently has a

streak of 17 straight games against ACC competition with double

figure scoring.

Solomon Leads ACC in Scoring

Will Solomon shot less than 50 percent from the field, but he had one

of his top all-around games against Hartford in the season opener. He

scored 17 points, but had eight assists and just two turnovers in 39

minutes of play. His ability to drive and then pitch to Pasha Bains

or Tony Stockman got the Tigers off on the right foot. His 8/2

assist-to-turnover ratio was the best ratio of his career and the

assist total was his second best. He also did a solid job on the

defensive end, holding Hartford guard Wayne McClinton to 10 points in

35 minutes. Solomon continued his outstanding play against Seton Hall

and Pirate wing guard Darius Lane. It was quite a head to head

battle, as Solomon finished with 31 points and Lane had 29. Solomon

had 24 points in the second half of the contest and finished the

night shooting 11-19 from the field, including 5-7 on three-point

shots. He played just 30 minutes, so he had more points than minutes

played. Solomon led the Tigers with 26 points against The Citadel, 12

against Northwestern and 19 against Winthrop. Solomon is currently

averaging 19.5 points per game to lead the ACC. Duke's Jason Williams

is second with 18.4 points per game.

He now has 117 points in four games. He is shooting 42.6 percent from

the field, 44.4 percent on 3-point shots, and 70.8 percent from the

foul line. The stat line that Coach Shyatt will follow all year is

his assist/turnover ratio. Last year Solomon had more turnovers than

assists, but so far this year he has 27 assists and just 17 miscues

(1.59).

Shyatt to Coach 100th Game

Saturday night Larry Shyatt will coach his 100th game as a collegiate

head coach. After coaching 28 games in one season at Wyoming, Shyatt

has coached 71 games at Clemson. Now in his fourth season, the

fourth-year head coach is 54-45 overall. At Clemson, he is 35-36 in

his third year.

Shyatt to Coach in Maccabiah Games

Clemson Head Coach Larry Shyatt has been selected to coach the United

States team in the 2001 Maccabiah Games in Israel. The games will be

held next July 7-27. Shyatt has already started his preparation for

the Games and had an August camp in New York for prospective players,

who will mainly be players of Jewish heritage from college programs

at all NCAA levels. The team will hold a pre-tournament camp at

Clemson this summer prior to going to Israel. For more information on

the team and the tournament, contact Andy Solomon at The Citadel. He

will be the press officer for the team for the event.

Shyatt is in his third year as Clemson's head coach, his fourth as a

Division I head coach overall. He led Wyoming to a 19-9 record and

the NIT in 1997-98. In his first year at Clemson he took the Tigers

to the NIT Championship game, a first in Clemson history. The Tigers

won 20 games that year and Shyatt became just the fourth coach in ACC

history to win 20 games in his first year at a league school. Last

year Clemson had a 10-20 record. Six players missed a combined 26

games due to injury during last year.

Shyatt has coached the ACC scoring champion each of his two years at

Clemson. Terrell McIntyre led the league with a 17.9 average in

1998-99, then Will Solomon paced the conference with a 20.9 mark last

year.

Shyatt is in his second tour of duty at Clemson. He was Rick Barnes

top assistant from 1994-95 through the 1996-97 season. His last year

he helped the Tigers to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament and a #8

final national ranking in the USA Today poll, the highest final

ranking in Clemson history.

Newcomers Lead Bench

Larry Shyatt has gotten some strong play off the bench this season.

The newcomers have made significant contributions off the bench. Most

notable is Tony Stockman who is third on the team with 11.7 points a

game. The freshman from Medina, OH, has scored in double figures in

five of the six games this season, including a best 16 points against

Winthrop, the school where is brother played. He has scored 11 points

against Hartford, Northwestern and Western Carolina. He is second on

the team in three-pointers made with 13, behind Will Solomon's 20. He

is averaging the most playing time of all the freshman and is

actually third on the team in minutes played behind Solomon and

Edward Scott with 24.0 minutes per game.

Chris Hobbs is also turning heads as a rookie. The freshman from

Chapel Hill, NC is averaging 7.3 points per game, which is fifth on

the team. He has scored in double figures in two of the six games so

far and actually has posted double-doubles in those games, scoring 11

points with 15 rebounds vs. The Citadel and 13 points and 10 rebounds

against Northwestern.

Against Western Carolina junior transfer Jamar McKnight scored 12

points. It was his first game at Clemson after an injury to a finger

on his shooting hand limited his practice time and delayed his debut

in a Tiger uniform after transferring from Northwest Community

College (MS). Likewise against the Catamounts Dwon Clifton scored his

first points. The freshman from Louisburg, NC had not scored in

limited action in the first four games. He had only played 18 minutes

in the first four contests but played 14 against Western Carolina and

scored 14 points.

Bench Production

In the 87-52 win over Western Carolina Clemson's bench was

responsible for a season-best 47 points (54 percent of the team's

scoring in that game). All season, the Tiger bench has been a force

for opponents to deal with. Of Clemson's 461 total points through

five games, the bench has scored 178 points or nearly 30 points per

game. The output accounts for 38.7 percent of the Clemson offense.

In four of six games, at least two reserves have entered the game to

score in double figures. Tony Stockman and Chris Hobbs scored 14 and

11 points, respectively against The Citadel. Then in the Northwestern

game, Hobbs added 13 and Stockman added 11. Las t time out, Jamar

McKnight scored 12 in his first game at Clemson and Stockman hit for

11 points. That was a streak of three consecutive games with at least

two reserves in double figures.

There were only five times in all of last season that a Clemson bench

player scored in double figures and in no games did two reserve

players score in double digits.

Hobbs Records Double-Doubles in Back to Back Games

Freshman Chris Hobbs didn't take long to record his first career

double-double as a Clemson Tiger. The native of Chapel Hill had 11

points and 15 rebounds in Clemson's 84-76 win over The Citadel. He

also had a pair of blocked shots for his 28 minutes of work.

He followed it up with another double-double against Northwestern on

Nov. 28. He led the Tigers in scoring with 13 points and added 10

rebounds.

His first double-double came in just the third game of Hobbs career,

the shortest time it has taken a Clemson freshman to record a

double-double since Devin Gray had 26 points and 10 rebounds in his

second career game in 1991-92. Tree Rollins and Elden Campbell

actually had double-doubles in their first game at Clemson. In fact,

Rollins, one of two Tigers to have his number retired, had 22 points,

20 rebounds and nine blocked shots against St. John's in his first

game, nearly a triple double. Rollins holds the school record for

career double-doubles with 62. Dale Davis had 52.

Hobbs has been a pleasant surprise to the Clemson coaches this year.

He sat out all but two games in his senior year of high school due to

a torn ACL injury that he suffered in the summer of 1999. He has

worked hard on the knee and is a strong 6-7 and 265 pound forward.

Double Double-Doubles

The two double-doubles by Chris Hobbs and Adam Allenspach on Nov. 28

vs. Northwestern were the first in the same game by Clemson since

Harold Jamison and Tom Wideman posted double digits in points and

rebounds against Butler in their final game (third round NIT) at

Littlejohn Coliseum in 1999. The double-double by Hobbs vs. the

Wildcats was his second straight double-double. He had 11 points and

15 rebounds in the win over The Citadel on Nov. 25. He is the first

freshman to post back-to-back double-doubles since 1991-92 when

Sharone Wright did it in the last two games of the season.

Three Tigers Top Ten Rebounds

In addition to Chris Hobbs' 10 rebounds and Adam Allenspach's 12

rebounds vs. Northwestern, one other Tiger got into double digits in

rebounds. Dustin Braddick had 10 boards, including six on the

offensive glass. That put three players in double-figure rebounds in

the Northwestern game. The last time the Tigers had three players

with at least 10 boards was nearly 15 years ago. Against

Bethune-Cookman on Dec. 14, 1985, Horace Grant, Glen McCants and

Jerry Pryor each had double figure totals off the glass. To go with

his 15 points, Pryor had 11 rebounds. Grant had 10 board and 11

points and McCants had 10 rebounds with just eight points.

Clemson Offensive Numbers Up

Clemson is a much more up-tempo team this year. The Tigers are

averaging 76.8 points a game this year, up from the 64.4 scoring

average of last year. Clemson was averaging 82.7 points a game before

it ran into the slow-down Princeton-type style offense of

Northwestern. Entering their game with Clemson, the Wildcats had been

holding opponents to only 42.7 points per game. The Tigers scored 57

in the win.

So far this year Clemson has three players averaging in double

figures. Clemson had just two games all of last year in which they

had four players score in double figures. Will Solomon and Adam

Allenspach were Clemson's only two players to average in double

figures last year.

Clemson has already had three games in which four players have scored

in double figures. The Tigers have had at least three players score

in double digits in every game this season. Clemson's shooting

percentage is 44.3 percent, up from 40.4 last year, and the

three-point percentage is 35.0, up from 33.2 percent last year. What

is most impressive is the team's free throw shooting. The Tigers have

made 71.2 percent so far this year, up from 67.1 last year. No

Clemson team has shot better than 70 percent from the foul line over

the course of a season since the 1986-87, Horace Grant's senior year.

Entering the Northwestern game, one area Clemson needs improvement is

rebounding. Clemson was getting out-rebounded by a margin of 6.3, but

against the Wildcats, the Tigers claimed a 43-28 advantage on the

boards. Clemson is now only getting out-rebounded 40.7 to 39.8 for

the season.

In each of Larry Shyatt's first two years Clemson ranked first or

second in the ACC in rebounding. Clemson ranked eighth in the country

in that area his first year and the +4.4 margin last season was

eighth best in school history.

Solomon Among Top 10 Shooting Guard by Two Publications

Clemson guard Will Solomon is ranked among the top 10 shooting guards

in the nation according to Dick Vitale's Preseason Magazine and by

Lindy's Basketball. Lindy's ranks Solomon third in the nation, behind

two ACC players, Juan Dixon of Maryland and Joseph Forte of North

Carolina. Dick Vitale lists Solomon as the eighth best shooting guard

in the nation. Solomon has also been chosen first-team All-ACC by

many preseason publications, including USA Today. He was a

second-team selection by media attending ACC Operation Basketball.

Clemson as a team was ranked seventh in the preseason poll by that

group.
