Tigers climb in baseball polls, sweep weekly ACC honors |

Miller, a junior from Windermere, Fla., batted .588 with an .882 slugging percentage and a .650 on-base percentage to lead Clemson to four wins in five games this past week. He was 10-for-17 with two doubles, one homer, seven RBIs, six runs, three walks, and two stolen bases. In Wednesday’s game at Western Carolina and Friday’s game against No. 9 Georgia Tech, Miller combined to go 7-for-7 with two walks, meaning he reached base in nine straight plate appearances. In the three-game series against the top-10 Yellow Jackets, Miller was 5-for-10 to lead the Tigers to two wins. On the season, he leads the ACC in batting average (.437) by 37 points and on-base percentage (.535) by 53 points along with totaling eight doubles, three triples, two homers and 32 RBIs. Miller has scored 37 runs with 28 walks, and 18 stolen bases in 37 games (35 starts). Sarratt, a graduate student from Gaffney, S.C., earned two wins in two starts and did not allow an earned run in 14.1 innings pitched. He picked up wins over Furman and No. 9 Georgia Tech by combining to allow just seven hits (all singles), a .140 opponents’ batting average, one unearned run and two walks with 11 strikeouts. Remarkably, in the 14.1 innings pitched during the week, Sarratt allowed only one runner to advance past second base – and that runner was safe at second base due to a fielding error on what could have been an inning-ending double play. Against Furman on Tuesday, Sarratt tossed 6.0 scoreless innings and allowed just four singles and no walks with five strikeouts in Clemson’s 5-0 win. He did not allow a Paladin to advance past second base and allowed just two Paladins to advance past first base. In his first ACC start of the season vs. Georgia Tech on Sunday, Sarratt shut down a Yellow Jacket team that entered the series leading the ACC with a .316 batting average. On Senior Day at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, Sarratt pitched a career-long 8.1 innings to earn the win. He allowed just three singles, no earned runs, and two walks with six strikeouts. On the season, Sarratt is 5-1 with a 1.89 ERA and 41 strikeouts against only six walks in 52.1 innings pitched over 13 appearances (eight starts). DURHAM, N.C.—Virginia won its ninth weekend series, twice shutting out Boston College in Chestnut Hill, to remain atop the Baseball America Top 25 for the third consecutive week. The top five teams—Virginia, South Carolina, Oregon State and Florida—went a combined 15-2 and remained in the same spots. No new teams entered the top 10, though Texas A&M fell three spots to No. 9 after losing a series at Missouri. A week full of upsets and closely contested conference series brought no big winners in the Baseball America Top 25. Southern Mississippi, Oklahoma State and Connecticut were the biggest gainers, all moving up three spots after weekend series victories. Fresno State took the biggest fall in this week’s rankings, tumbling from No. 13 to No. 19 after losing twice to Hawaii, though the Bulldogs can salvage a series split Monday. For the third week in a row, three new teams entered the Baseball America Top 25. Clemson took two out of three games against then-No. 12 Georgia Tech and returned to the rankings for the first time since March 21, when it was ranked No. 19. Gonzaga also moves back into the Top 25 after a week’s absence, sweeping Santa Clara on the road to begin a 13-game road trip. Texas State won a series at McNeese State to remain tied for the lead in the Southland Conference and enters the rankings at No. 25. The ACC has six teams ranked in the Top 25, the most of any conference. The staff of Baseball America determines the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are through games of May 1 and do not include ties.

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of South Carolina has been ranked No. 1 in
the latest "Collegiate Baseball" newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll.
The defending national champions (35-8) swept a 3-game series at home
against Auburn over the past weekend and have won five in a row and eight of
their last nine games. The Gamecocks are tied for the lead in the
Southeastern Conference with a 17-4 record. South Carolina has a superb 2.58
team ERA with 354 strikeouts and 135 walks - a better than 3:1 strikeout to
walk ratio.
On offense, the Gamecocks are averaging 6.5 runs per game while on defense
fielders have committed only 38 errors in 43 games for a .977 fielding
percentage.
Virginia, ranked No. 1 the previous five weeks, slipped to second after
beating Boston College two of three games.
Poll Notes: Several other teams have been hot. Kent St. has won 7 in a row,
Vanderbilt 6 straight and Florida 6 consecutive. In key series over the past
weekend, Texas beat Oklahoma two of three, Oregon St. won two of three at
UCLA, Clemson beat Georgia Tech. two of three, Arizona St. knocked off
Stanford two of three, Florida St. beat Miami (Fla.) two of three, Hawaii
beat Fresno St. two of three, and Georgia beat Arkansas two of three.
Two teams fell out of the top 30 in Stanford (2-3 last week) and St. John's
(2-3). Two new teams in the poll include Arizona (27-16), which swept a
3-game series against Southern California, and Coastal Carolina (30-15),
which leads the Big South Conference with a 14-4 record and has won five
games in a row.
The "Collegiate Baseball" newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball
poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
* LHP Josh Osich, Oregon St.: Osich threw the first 9-inning complete game
no-hitter for Oregon St. since 1947, a span of 64 years, as he beat UCLA,
2-0. He struck out a career-high 13. Osich came within one batter of a
perfect game as he issued a walk in the fourth inning with two outs. He
retired the first 11 batters of the game and then the final 16 during a
121-pitch effort. Of his 27 outs, only three balls left the infield. The
no-hitter was the fourth in school history.
* SS Clint Moore, Army: Moore delivered 4 home runs with 16 RBI. He began
the week as he hit for the home run cycle with 11 RBI as Army swept a
doubleheader from Lafayette. He hit a grand slam and drove in 5 runs in a
9-0 win in the opener. Moore then crushed a solo shot, a 2-run homer and a
3-run blast in the Black Nights' 12-2 victory in the nightcap. He set career
highs with 3 home runs and 6 RBI in the second game.
* RHP Logan Billbrough, William & Mary: Billbrough struck out 16
Northeastern batters during a complete game, 8-0 win over Northeastern. The
16 strikeouts are the most in school history.
* SS James Brooks, Utah: Brooks collected 13 extra-base hits during five
games as he went 18-for-26 (.692) at the plate. He hit 9 doubles, 2 triples
and 1 home run with 12 RBI and 10 runs scored. He began the week with a
6-for-6 performance against Utah Valley (tying a school record for hits in a
game) with 6 RBI, 3 doubles and a triple.
* DH Joey DeMichele, Arizona St.: DeMichele blasted three home runs last
week, all in one game against Stanford, as he became the first Sun Devil
since Jeff Larish in 2005 to homer three times in a game. Over four games,
he was 7-for-15 (.467) with a 1.067 slugging percentage and 8 RBI.
