CLEMSON - With three tough losses behind it and a difficult stretch lying ahead, Clemson hoped to regain much needed momentum Tuesday night. With in-state rival Winthrop playing the foil, the Tigers did just that.

Patrick Hogan pitched out of a tight spot in the top of the eighth inning Tuesday, then Clemson (19-13) broke open the close game with three runs in the bottom of the frame to ease past the Eagles, 9-5, on a cool, blustery night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Nursing a 6-5 lead in the eighth, Clemson's Jeff Hahn allowed a one-out single to Winthrop's Bennett Stapf. After Hahn's wild pitch advanced Stapf to second base, Tiger head coach Jack Leggett called on Hogan.

The relief ace responded by striking out Chris Leroux and getting Brian Haney on a ground out to end the inning.

Clemson then put the game away with a three-run bottom half of the inning, with Daniel Pritchard, Russell Triplett and Tyler Colvin driving in runs.

Hogan then ended the game by retiring the Eagles (19-14) in order in the top of the ninth.

Hogan's solid work made a winner of Clemson starter Kris Harvey (6-0). Harvey fought control problem for much of the evening, walking five in his 5 2/3 innings. He allowed four hits and four earned runs before being relieved by Hahn in the sixth.

Winthrop starter Jon Wilson took the loss, lasting just 1 1/3 innings and leaving with his team trailing 4-2.

Harvey, Triplett and Herman Demmink each had two hits to lead the Clemson offense. Triplett was the only Tiger to drive in multiple runs, finishing the night with two RBI.

Stapf and Daniel Carte each had two hits for Winthrop.

Clemson is back in action this evening, traveling to Columbia for its final regular season meeting with South Carolina. The Gamecocks have won two of the first three games between the teams this season.

The Tigers then return to ACC play this weekend, traveling to North Carolina for a three game series beginning Friday.
