ECU Takes Out Tigers, 10-0

East Carolina scored 10 runs in the first five innings and cruised to a 10-0 victory over #21 Clemson Sunday in front of 1,280 fans at Coastal Federal Field. East Carolina, coached by former Tiger player and assistant coach Randy Mazey, improved to 3-3, while Clemson fell to 1-2.

Mike Flye (2-0) pitched 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing only three hits, to earn the win. Flye and T.J. Hose combined to allow just three Tiger hits. Kris Harvey (0-1) suffered the loss in his first appearance of the season.

After Harvey retired the Pirates in order in the first, East Carolina scored two runs in the second inning thanks to four singles. Mike Grace led off the inning with a single up the middle, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and went to third on a line-drive single to center by Jake Smith. Adam Witter followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Grace. Jamie Ray then blooped a single to left field, and Brett Lindgren laced a single to right field to load the bases. Harrison Eldridge grounded a slow roller to second base for an RBI groundout. Harvey avoided further damage when Billy Richardson flew out to deep centerfield to end the frame.

The Pirates added to their lead with runs in the third and fourth innings. Mark Minicozzi hit a solo homer to left-center in the third, his first of the season and the first allowed by Clemson in 2005. In the fourth, Jamie Ray reached on an error and stole second. After Lindgren was hit by a pitch and Eldridge struck out trying to bunt with two strikes, Richardson singled to left. Tyler Colvin threw out Ray at the plate trying to score, but Lindgren scored on the next play when Drew Costanzo singled through the right side. Minicozzi upped East Carolina's lead to 5-0 with a single up the middle, scoring Richardson.

East Carolina kept the heat on in the fifth inning. Smith reached on an error by Widmann for the second time, but was erased on a fielder's choice by Witter. Ray then blooped a double down the right-field line and Lindgren loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. After Eldridge fouled off several two-strike pitches, he singled up the middle to score two runs. Richardson then ripped a two-run single to left field. Costanzo gave the Pirates a double-digit lead when he scorched a triple over the head of Travis Storrer in right field.

Clemson will play host to #17 UC Irvine on Friday at 4:00 PM in its next action.
