Clemson Gets 3 Game Sweep of NY Tech by 51-3 Margin |
Clemson, SC--Jeff Baker had three hits, including his ninth home run
of the season and drove in four runs, leading Clemson to a 14-0 victory over New York Tech in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday. Clemson won the first game on Saturday 13-0. It marked the first time since Feb. 16, 1992 that Clemson won two games by shutout in the same day. Clemson swept Eastern Kentucky, 7-0 and 22-0 at Kingsmore Stadium that day. Clemson outscored New York Tech 51-3 in the three-game series played over two days. It was the most runs scored in a three-game series by Clemson since 1997 when the Tigers outscored Coastal Carolina 52-16 in a three-game set. The 48-run margin over the three games was the highest combined victory margin in a three-game series since 1969 when Clemson outscored Buffalo 61-9 in three consecutive games. Nick Glaser was the starter and winner for the Tigers. He went five innings, allowed just two hits, struck out six and walked just two. It was the second win of the week for Glaser, who had been out with a hip injury for much of the season. He is now 3-0 for the season. Five pitchers worked the game overall for Clemson and they collectively allowed just three hits. Ed Gillespie was the starter and loser for New York Tech. His record dropped to 0-3. Tech had two hits in the fourth inning from Ryan Nevins and Mike Rick, but that was the only inning in which they had two base runners. In addition to Baker's heroics, Michael Johnson had three hits and a walk in five plate appearances. He is now 21 for his last 41 at the plate and is hitting over .410 for the season. Ryan Riley and Seth Miller added two hits apiece for the Tigers, who are now 21-8 for the season. New York Tech fell to 4-10-1 with the loss. Clemson scored seven runs in the first three innings to put the game out of reach early. Clemson scored three runs in the first on two hits. The Tigers added two runs in the second, then two runs in the third. Clemson scored five runs in the seventh with the big hit the three-run homer by Jeff Baker. Clemson added another run in the bottom of the eighth on a home run by reserve catcher Gene Pierce. It was his first career hit as a Tiger and just his second at bat of the year. Clemson will next be in action in Tuesday at Western Carolina for a 3:00 PM game.

Game 2:
CLEMSON - Zane Green and Russell Triplett each went 4-5 with two runs scored to lead Clemson past New York Tech 13-0 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.
Matt Henrie earned the win and upped his record to 3-0. New York Tech's Kyle Patten dropped to 1-2 with the loss.
The Tigers exploded in the second inning with six runs as 11 batters came to the plate. Jeff Baker led off with a single and both Michael Johnson and Jarrod Schmidt followed with RBI doubles. Green, Casey Stone and Kyle Frank each added RBI singles and Baker capped the scoring with his second hit of the inning, an RBI double.
Clemson added two more runs in the third inning after a throwing error by New York Tech shortstop Mike Gaffney allowed Schmidt and Green to score. An RBI double by Green and an RBI single by Triplett increased the Tiger lead to 11-0 in the fourth inning.
Khalil Greene was hit by a pitch in the second inning for the 40th time in his career, breaking the Clemson record set by Gary Burnham from 1994-97.
Clemson improves to 20-8 on the season while New York Tech drops to 4-9-1. The teams will play the second game of the doubleheader starting at 7 PM.

GAME 1:
Clemson, SC--Michael Johnson belted out two home runs and a double
and drove in five runs to lead 12th-ranked Clemson to a 24-3 win over
New York Tech Friday night at Kingsmore Stadium. It was the first
meeting in history between the two schools. Clemson improved to 19-8
with the win, while New York Tech fell to 4-8-1.
The same two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday. The
first game will begin at 3:00 PM and the second game will start at
7:00 PM. Sunday's game scheduled for 1:00 PM has been cancelled.
Johnson homered in the first and fifth innings and had a
double in the fourth. The Clemson first baseman now has eight home
runs for the year to tie Jeff Baker for the team lead. He was 3-6 at
the plate for the night and is now 17 for his last 32 at the plate, a
.567 average.
Clemson established a season high for runs scored and hits.
The 24 runs scored were the most since the 1999 season when Clemson
scored 24 runs in a 24-4 victory over Georgia Tech at Kingsmore
Stadium.
Steve Reba was Clemson's starter and winner. He is now 5-0
for the season and 9-0 over two years. He has not lost this century.
His last loss took place in May of 1999. Reba allowed two hits
within the first three batters he faced and allowed an unearned run.
But, he did not allow a hit over his last 4 1/3 innings. He was
pulled in the top of the sixth with Clemson holding a 14-1 lead.
Clemson's pitching staff allowed just one earned run all night.
Khalil Greene did not have a hit in the game, but did set an
all-time Clemson record and tie another. Clemson's starting
shortstop was hit by a pitch three times in the game, including twice
in the sixth inning alone. He set a Clemson record for being hit by
a pitch in a game and he now has been hit by a pitch 39 times in his
career, tying Gary Burnham's all-time mark.
In addition to Johnson's production on Friday, Jeff Baker and
Jarrod Schmidt each drove in three runs. Baker had two hits and
three runs scored in addition to his RBI total. Casey Stone had
three hits from the leadoff slot in the order and scored three times.
Clemson scored three runs in the first inning on a walk to
Stone, a single by Kyle Frank, a sacrifice fly by Greene, a ground
out by Jeff Baker and a home run by Johnson. The Tigers added five
runs on five hits in the second to take an 8-1 lead. Clemson added
nine runs in the sixth on five hits and two New York Tech errors.
