POST GAME QUOTES
Clemson Head Coach Jack Leggett (opening statement): - "There's no easy way to end a season, but this was particularly tough. We have some very experienced players, but we didn't execute that final play very well. We had trouble hitting with men on base all day. We had the big four-run inning and I felt good about that, but I felt we needed more runs." (On fight following last play): "I really don't know what happened. I didn't see what happened- This was an emotional game on both sides. It was a tough way to end our season." (On the game's final play): "I knew the safety squeeze (bunt) was a possibility. We've got experienced people out there, we just didn't handle it very well. They (Louisiana-Lafayette) did a perfect job with the bunt, we were just a little late getting to first (base) and make the play." (On how he'll remember 2000 Clemson team): "I have great memories of this team. They worked extremely hard. I just wanted to take them to the final game, they're a great bunch of kids. I'm just disappointed for them." Clemson rightfielder Justin Singleton (on his day in right field): "The wind was blowing out all day and if you got it (the baseball) high enough, it had a chance. The two balls that 2 caught, were hit sohigh which gave a chance to get a good beat on them- I thought I had a good chance on the one that I missed too. They (Louisiana-Lafayette) did a good job of getting the ball in the air." Clemson Pitcher Jarrod Schmidt (on his pitching performance): "I thought I threw pretty well. The wind really helped them. I didn't think the two (home runs) that got out, should've- Things just didn't work out today." La.-Lafayette Head Coach Tony Robichaux
(opening statement): "After yesterday's rain,we decided to start Justin Gabriel today. We thought he'd pitch better today than be did before. He gave us an opportunity to win. We were disappointed we didn't stay away from the big inning today. We consider a big inning three or more runs. We gave up four in the seventh inning. Before the ninth inning we gathered everyone together. We knew if we could tie it, we could win it. We were playing for the tie first. Rick (Haydel) had a huge hit, giving us runners at first and third. We sent one of our best bunters up (Steven Feehan). We were trying to get the tying run in. Anything else is extra, and we got a whole lot of extra after that. We survived and advance." (on the team's success in elimination games): "We're 7-1 in elimination games this year. I think it is a credit to the character of our players and their ability to evaluate where they are and why they lost before." (on their team's aggressive play despite being a first-time CWS participant): "We've done it all year. Our athletic director has been with us quite a bit this season and he came over to me atter the game and said to me 'I knew we were going to bunt Feehan.' 5o we've done this before. I think we would have locked up if we'd had tried to play different. We're going to play the way we played to get here." La.-Lafayette center fielder Steven Feeham (on his bunt): "I knew we were going to bunt to try and push the run in. It was the first sacrifice bunt that I got down this tournament. I'd had two other opportunities, but couldn't get them down. The ball didn't roll foul and Rick (Haydel) did a great job getting in to score." BOX SCORE
