Maybe he should've covered his knees

Oct 16, 2022, 6:27 PM

Is that no longer a rule?

I’m pretty certain that knee pads never prevented knee injuries, although in th e”old days” we would think playing knee padless was asking for trouble.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, only really kept you from getting grass cuts***

Those knee pads protected your knee caps.

Oct 16, 2022, 7:15 PM

Direct contact to your knee cap by a hard surface like a helmet or a cleat ... hurts like hell.

I’ve been surprised and a bit perplexed by the recent trend away from simple knee padding.

It seems about like deciding not to wear a cup.

Football players don't wear cups.

Not really.
Knee pads protect from bumps and bruises, but do nothing for serious injuries like ligament or cartilage damage.

I ruined my knees playing football, including both ACL’s, and have two artificial knees now.
Knee pads do nothing to provide structural support for the knee joint.
I would still recommend wearing knee pads, but only to keep from scraping or bruising the knee.

I wish Matthew Maloney the best with his ACL surgery, and for a 100% recovery. It is tough.
The young man was living out his dream of playing for the Tigers, and Dabo thought enough of him to be starting him on special teams.

Go Tigers, Beat Syracuse!!!

They prevented aot of injuries, especially in the days of the chop block. They won't prevent an ACL rupture.

Obviously not but it should be. Not to mention it looks kind of stupid, sissy, odd or whatever to me.

Look through some game pictures. Kneepads aren't common anymore.

Would not help an ACL injury.

Stupid comment.

I had two ACL tears and neither were preventable by knee pads. Prayers for this young man who walked on to play for the Tigers.

Don’t think that statement was necessary.

Ignorance more likely.
I respect the walk-on players that make it!
Particularly the ones that start at any position.

Too bad, a walk-on that’s been

an in-game contributor. I believe he spent time rehabbing a knee a couple of years ago.

Good luck Matthew. Rehab hard and get back on the field!

A few years ago the NCAA said that football pants will be worn to cover the knees. Now, all of us know those pads only protect what someone has already mentioned. Just the ground, cleats or a helmet. Doesn’t do anything for the knee joint! Now watch the players, the pants do not have pads and they pull the pant legs up to purposely get above the knee. They may as well wear Bermuda shorts. It makes me laugh to see today’s players shed the knee pads but they all have to have gloves on. Full length sleeves, must be for looks, it doesn’t get cold down here in the sunny South.

Tough break for the young man. As a walk-on, getting playing time on special teams says a lot about him. Prayers for a successful surgery and rehab.

Hang in there Matthew! Get well soon!***

He was always first downfield on kickoffs.

Of course with BT kicking the ball was always in the end zone.

Very, very happy- very, very proud.

Sorry to hear. I hope he gets better soon.
Seems these days most players have ditched the knee pads, hip pads, cups and the greater part of their shoulder pads. I remember two of the most painful (but not serious) things I feared playing football was smacking the side of my knee on someone's helmet or having someone's facemask mounts (where the facemask attaches to the helmet) or even just when their facemask scraped along the length of my lower leg, especially the bones. Man, that would hurt for a minute or two!

At least in high school the old hip pads, thigh pads have been replaced by what looks like a padded girdle. Still find knee pads on my bus after games only they are about half the size that we used to wear.
Some of the guys only wear the girdle going from games. Don't really look but they just might even have a cup built inn.

Funny now all the equipment managers are girls now.
