Update on Scooter . . .

May 28, 2020, 4:14 PM
IMG_3688.jpg(169.7 K)

Here he is as we were leaving for the Vet . . . No one would ever guess he is having issues . . . He looks happy for a 14 year old boy!!!!!!!

His appt was at 8:45am . . . by 9:45am he was escorted into the building . . . Due to C-19, no one is allowed in and phone conversations with the Vet is all you get . . .

The long and the short of it is on-sight blood work eliminated both kidney and liver issues as the cause of his seizures. Leaving us with epilepsy or brain tumor as our options. After talking with my son, the Vet determined it was likely due to a tumor. In either case the treatments are the same.

Scoot was given an injection of "medazalam" (a close kin to Xanax) to make it more difficult for a seizure to occur. The Vet also prescribed "zonisamide" 2x daily. Zonisamide is an anti seizure med which is fast acting.

He chose zonisamide over phenobarbital because the later takes up to a week to get into the system. Yesterday and this morning, Scooter had 3 seizures, each lasting 4-5 minutes, each occurring ~7 hrs apart.

By 12:30, Scoot was at home and had received his first dose of zonisamide.

At 3:00pm he had another seizure. This one not as violent, with a shorter duration than his previous ones.

The doctor has hope we can get him regulated. No "termination of life" issues had to be addressed today.

Thanks to Calhoun2 for giving us hope and to all who have lifted Scoot and my son in prayers since yesterday's request.

I for one am glad you are stopping. You are one of the most ignorant posters ever. You obviously think very highly of your own opinion, unlike the rest of us - RockHillTiger

you go Scooter!

Prayers Skeeta, glad your outcome has been more positive than ours yesterday. I really had no idea how torn up I'd be the past 24+ hours. I'm thankful your family is not going through what we are right now.

I am still aching for you!!!

May 28, 2020, 8:34 PM

It is a brutal decision to make . . . and just as hard to live with.

There are no shortcuts or easy ways to do what you had to do . . . You are still in my prayers!!!

Scooter is no where near being out of the woods. He has had another seizure (@7pm). Only 4 hours since his last one. Again, not quite as severe and shorter than yesterday's . . . we are holding on to
H O P E.

Hoping the best for you and yours . . .

So glad he’s hanging in there!! I had to put my best friend of 14 years down last Friday. Worst pain in the world but I am thankful for the time I had with her. I’ll be praying for you and scooter.

Old Dog

Toward the last in the morning she could not
get up, even when I rattled her pan.
I helped her into the yard, but she stumbled
and fell. I knew it was time.

The last night a mist drifted over the fields.
In the morning she would not raise her head –
the far, clear mountains we had walked
surged back to mind.

We looked a slow bargain: our days together
were the ones we had already had.
I gave her something the vet had given,
and patted her still, a good last friend.

Best to Scooter. Yes the pheno takes a while to build up in their system. Those seizures were just awful to watch our dog go through and once they started coming closer together she hardly knew who she was or where she was. Glad to be on the other side of it and hopefully Scooter will be too soon. That other stuff may have been what they put in her IV. Thanks to all the animal vets out there.

Another Update . . .

May 29, 2020, 7:06 AM

As morning breaks and the rains continue H O P E is beginning to fade.

The seizures are coming like clockwork every 3-3.5 hours. Though shorter and less intense they are taking their toll.

The Vet will be notified and it will be decision time once again.

My youngest son has been blessed with a 5 yr old, nonverbal, autistic son that requires constant attention, yet Forrest manages to hold and love Scooter through each episode.

He is a good daddy.

Thank you all for your prayers and kind thoughts.

Have seizures. Turned out it was due to those toilet bowl cleaners that turn the water blue. We didn’t know he was drinking from the toilet. Stopped using the cleaner and the seizures went away

Latest Scooter news:

May 29, 2020, 3:29 PM

Vet has given him another “seizure blocking” shot, changed his medication and gave a mist to spray in his nostrils to bring him out of a seizure.

This is his last option.

If this doesn’t work, it will be decision time for my son.

Thanks again for kind thoughts shared and prayers for my son and his buddy.
