A felony is way too much of a charge for what they did.

I am as appalled as any of you, but taking away someone's right to vote for damaging a rock is a little too far.

This gives them that option and "incentive" to cooperate

Start with the high charge, potentially knock it down if they cough up more useful information and/or the rock.
I don't know what they're being charged for specifically, but there's also a chance that they lied and obstructed justice so badly that they really do deserve the felony charge. Hard to say without the details, but at least the PoPo aren't playing around about this.

I really don't think somebody should be charged with a felony for trying to help his son get out of trouble. No idea what the other kid did, but I do feel sympathy for the dad.

We don't have any real information on what lead to this charge, so we're all speculating blindly. However, if they lied to the police during an investigation, the laws are pretty cut-and-dry. You reap what you sew in that case.
In all likelihood, though, this is a shot across the bow to guarantee cooperation going forward. I bet they'll enter a plea bargain and end up with a wrist slapping.

But I suppose my opinion of whether it should be a felony or not would depend entirely on what he did that was called "obstruction of justice." I definitely understand the instinct he'd have to protect his child, but I also know that with those actions come consequences.
But, in the end, he won't be convicted of a felony unless he refuses to plead down to something lower.

Conspiracy and obstructing justice. While the teenager was probably involved in damaging the rock, I'm not so sure about the dad. To me it sounds like he's getting the felony charge for the "obstructing" part.

His part in the conspiracy ocurred on June 20. Presumably, that's when he became aware that his son was involved and decided to cover it up. The obstruction of justice took place on June 24. He probably lied to the police on that date.

Silly Question
Aug 16, 2013, 1:55 PM
|
|
Since Howard's Rock is not something that is readily available to buy in a market place, how did they determine its value to be between 2K and 10K? I mean I have always been told that something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it and I'm sure someone would be willing to pay more than 10K if it was for sale.
If its maximum value is really below 10K, who can I contact to purchase it?

I am not sure that God sends his wrath on others that love and serve him. I do not know if the young man is guilty or not, I will let the judicial system make that determination. Glad however to know that you know God's mind and when and how He will excercise his wrath. Perhaps you need more time in study and prayer.
